5. 125 vs India at The Kennington Oval 2018

England had already won the series 3-1 but the visitors were in with a chance at the Kia Oval in the final test match. England led by only 40 from the first innings and at 62-2, India were fighting back.

Enter England’s two best batsmen – Alastair Cook and Joe Root. The pair put on a superb partnership of 259 runs to take the game away from India. Root, especially swept the spin of Ravindra Jadeja really well on a surface that offered some turn and bounce. He finished with 125 and England went on to win the test.

His experience will be vital if England are to pull off a great win in India this time around.

4. 254 vs Pakistan at Old Trafford 2016

A fantastic 254 by Joe Root helped England level the series against Pakistan at Old Trafford in 2016. Having lost the first test at Lords against Pakistan, it was imperative that the hosts fought back and won to keep themselves with a chance of winning the four match series.

On a good batting track, Root played the spin of Yasir Shah beautifully and punched off the back foot as well as driving against the pacers. It was a typical Root innings but the thing that stands out is how long he batted.

3. 228 vs Sri Lanka at Galle 2021

Perhaps the best playing against spin that any batsman has demonstrated in recent times. Joe Root is a fabulous player of spin in the subcontinent because of his nimble footwork. He gets right back against a short ball and looks to pull or nudge on the on side. Root goes forward to anything pitched up and drives or defends.

This double century had a mixture of the two along with beautiful sweep shots to put the Sri Lankan spinners off their lengths. His 228 was a classy innings on a turning track that helped England win the test match.

2. 110 vs South Africa at The Wanderers Stadium 2016

Against a bowling attack that featured Chris Morris, Kagiso Rabada and Morne Morkel, Joe Root scored a superb century to rescue England from 91-4 to 323 all out. This test is also famous for Stuart Broad’s 6 wickets.

There was swing and seam movement in the wicket along with the generous bounce that the Wanderers Stadium offers. His innings was responsible for England’s first innings lead of 10 and it set up a series win for the visitors.

The best innings that Joe Root has played till date has to be his 124 versus Australia in the 2015 Ashes at the Sophia Gardens. It was the first test of the Ashes series and the visitors had started strongly.

England were 43-3 in their first innings, when Joe Root and his Yorkshire teammate Gary Ballance found themselves at the crease. They put on 153 for the fourth wicket, counter attacking the Australian attack of Starc, Johnson, Lyon and Hazlewood.

Root scored 134 on a pitch offering plenty for the bowlers to help England win the first test match.
