Top 10 Best Overseas Players In IPL History
The Indian Premier League is best known for discovering talent – both homegrown and overseas. Since 2008, the tournament has done a fantastic job in unearthing such players. However, there have been a number of international superstars that have excelled in the tournament from the very beginning. The best overseas players in IPL history have brought rare skill-sets such as death-bowling prowess and power-hitting in abundance.
The likes of Quinton De Kock and Albie Morkel can consider themselves unlucky to miss out from such a list. They have both had very consistent performances over time for their respective franchises.
So, who are the best overseas players in IPL history?
Top Foreign Players IPL (1-3)
1. Lasith Malinga
Undoubtedly the greatest IPL player of all-time. There are few out and out bowlers on this list, which makes Malinga’s achievement all the more special. Four out of the five titles that the Mumbai Indians have won has involved Lasith Malinga.
He is the highest wicket-taker in IPL history. 170 wickets in just 122 games at an economy rate of 7.14 is fantastic.
2. Chris Gayle
Between 2011 and 2014, Chris Gayle was at the height of his powers, reeling of man of the match awards for RCB. He was at his destructive best, taking them to the final in 2011. A strong man with a massive bat, Gayle had no problem hitting sixes.
In fact he plundered 608, 733 and 708 runs in those three seasons. This, while striking at 183, 161 and 156. A magnificent 175 vs the Pune Warriors in 2013 encapsulated his prowess.
At the ripe age of 41, he is still going strong with the Kings XI Punjab.
3. AB De Villiers
The first truly 360 degree batsman to grace the Indian Premier League, AB De Villiers has been nothing short of sensational for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. He has won the most man of the match awards in IPL history and regularly wins games single-handedly.
A batsman with equal potency against both spin and pace. In the 2016 season, he scored 687 runs to help RCB to the IPL final, along with Virat Kohli – who scored 973.

Greatest Overseas Players IPL (4-6)
4. Dwyane Bravo
Arguably the second-best death-overs bowler in the history of the IPL, after Lasith Malinga. Dwyane Bravo has had a stellar career to date with the Chennai Super Kings. Two IPL titles with the franchise – 2011 and 2018.
His pinpoint accurate yorkers and his ability to smash the ball out of the park make him a superb asset. Add his fielding into the equation and he is one of the best all-rounders ever in this format.
5. David Warner
At times, David Warner has been a one-man show for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. At other times, he has had very little support with the bat. One such season was the 2016 IPL. Warner along with Dhawan carried the batting line-up and took the franchise to their first IPL title.
A dashing but sometimes conservative left-hander, Warner has defined consistency in the IPL. He has the most 50 plus scores in the history of the tournament.
6. Shane Watson
A brilliant all-rounder, Shane Watson has prospered at multiple franchises. He won a title with the Rajasthan Royals in 2008, with his stellar all-round performances and then followed up another success in 2018 – this time more with the bat.
Big and brutal are two words that can be used to describe Shane Watson. He has amazing power and ability with the bat. With the ball, he is very consistent and offers nothing to the opposition batsmen.

7. Sunil Narine
One of the greatest spinners in T20 cricket, Sunil Narine has been instrumental in KKR’s success in the IPL. He was their star bowler in both the 2012 and the 2014 triumph. In recent years, his batting has also gone through the roof.
Narine bowls beautiful mystery spin that batsmen still struggle to read.
8. Kieron Pollard
The player with the most IPL caps for the Mumbai Indians, Kieron Pollard has been a stalwart in the IPL. He is best known for finishing off games along with both Hardik and Krunal Pandya.
His greatest strength, though, is perhaps his adaptability and how smart he is. Pollard knows he has the ability to clear the ropes with ease but he targets specific bowlers when doing so.
9. Andre Russell
One of the most powerful batsmen in recent history. Andre Russell has been scintillating for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the past few IPL seasons. In 2019, he single-handedly almost dragged them to the play-offs.
His strike rate of 182.33 is the highest in IPL history by anyone with at least 500 runs. Plus, his superb fielding and efficient bowling makes him an all-round asset. Injuries have threatened to reduce the lengthiness of his career and he must be careful to manage himself well.
10. Mike Hussey
A legend for the Chennai Super Kings, Mike Hussey was brilliant for a number of years in the IPL. His versatility is amazing and he can bat at the top or in the middle-order. He has scored nearly 2000 runs.
Hussey won the orange cap in 2013, after scoring 733 runs in the season.
