Analysis of the India Test, ODI and T20 squad for the Australia 2020/21 Tour

India announced their Test, ODI and T20 squad for the tour to Australia 2020/21.

The India Squad For The Tour To Australia 2020/21

On 26th October 2020, the India squad for the Australia Tour Down Under which is starting in the end of November 2020, was announced. While some inclusions/exclusions were quite obvious some of them raised eyebrows of many fellow fans and Cricket Experts.

Major Highlights from the Squad declared

  • Rohit Sharma not picked in any of the three squads
  • KL Rahul named as the vice captain in ODIs and T20Is
  • Hardik Pandya has replaced Shivam Dube in ODIs and T20Is
  • Rishabh Pant dropped in both T20Is and ODIs
  • Varun Chakravarthy selected in T20Is
  • Kuldeep Yadav dropped from T20Is
  • Mayank, KL Rahul, Mohd. Shami, Navdeep selected in all 3 formats
  • Siraj was selected in the Test squad

1) Rohit Sharma not in any of the three squads, same for Ishant

Well if you look this news without the context, you may get mislead, and believe that Rohit Sharma got dropped, but NO! He is currently injured.

BCCI on their website clearly said that,

“The BCCI Medical Team will continue to monitor the progress of Rohit Sharma and Ishant Sharma.”

(This means that they aren’t yet ruled out from the India squad for Australia.)

2) KL Rahul as the vice captain

Rahul as the vice captain is merely due to the absence of Rohit Sharma, and it’s apparently clear that currently that KL isn’t the permanent VC. In the IPL, under KL Rahul’s captaincy, KXIP won 5 matches on the trot, with some good captaincy. And he also captained India in the 5th T20I against NZ earlier this year.

What ‘they’ said:

“He is good in all the 3 formats, he is responsible…in whatever number he is playing…and has the same work ethic as of Virat.”. – S. Sreesanth

“Rahul being groomed to be India’s next white-ball captain in Rohit’s absence” – Harsha Bhogle

“KL Rahul can be the next white ball captain for India” – Ajay Jadeja

3) Rishabh Pant’s exclusion

India announced their Test, ODI and T20 squad for the tour to Australia 2020/21.

Rishabh Pant had performed quite well in IPL, Domestic Cricket and U-19 Cricket to earn a call up for the Indian team, but despite being given ample opportunities, he has failed to capitalise on it, so it came with no surprise that he got dropped from ODIs as well as T20Is.

Should he have been in the India squad in Australia for the limited overs?

4) Varun Chakravarthy included in T20Is, Kuldeep dropped

India announced their Test, ODI and T20 squad for the tour to Australia 2020/21.

Varun has performed well in the List A matches he played, and decent in the T20s he played. But the thing that he’s a MYSTERY spinner could’ve caught the eyes of the selectors or maybe the fifer which he took in the IPL recently made their mind.

For Kuldeep, definitely he has performed poorly in the IPL, but he has performed exceptionally well in the T20 Internationals he has played, in T20Is he has the 2nd best bowling average just behind Rashid Khan. So definitely Kuldeep’s exclusion shocked me. He has been bowling well for India, along with Chahal. He should have perhaps made the India squad for the tour to Australia.

5) Siraj and Navdeep in Tests

Siraj and Navdeep’s selection. This was something I was hoping for, actually. Both are talented pacers, can bowl at good pace. They have performed well in First Class Cricket in the recent years/

Analysis of the Test Squad

This was the squad announced for Tests against Australia.

This squad is absolutely perfect, I don’t see any shortcomings or any players who didn’t deserve to be here. It would have been nice if Ishant, Rohit, Bhuvneshwar were fit, they would have been a huge boost to it, still it’s a good squad.

Possible Playing XI

  1. Mayank Agarwal
  2. KL Rahul
  3. Cheteshwar Pujara
  4. Virat Kohli
  5. Ajinkya Rahane
  6. Hanuma Vihari
  7. Rishabh Pant
  8. R. Ashwin
  9. Mohd. Shami
  10. Umesh Yadav
  11. Jasprit Bumrah

Analysis of the ODI Squad

This squad is also good, only thing missing is that probably they could’ve picked a backup keeper. I still remember WC 2019, when in a 15 man squad, India had as many as 4 keepers in the squad namely Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Karthik and Dhoni. (probably Kedar Jadhav too)

Possible Playing XI

  1. Mayank Agarwal
  2. Shikhar Dhawan
  3. Virat Kohli
  4. Shreyas Iyer
  5. KL Rahul
  6. Manish Pandey
  7. Hardik Pandya*/Ravindra Jadeja
  8. Navdeep Saini
  9. Yuzvendra Chahal
  10. Mohammed Shami
  11. Jasprit Bumrah

*If Hardik is injury free and can bowl then definitely Hardik, otherwise Jadeja can be a better choice.

Analysis of the India T20I Squad vs Australia

Varun Chakravarthy’s inclusion was a bit strange for me, and that too in the place of Kuldeep Yadav who performed exceptionally well in the T20Is he played. As a result, he features in the India squad for the tour to Australia for the T20I series.

Possible Playing XI

  1. KL Rahul
  2. Shikhar Dhawan
  3. Virat Kohli
  4. Shreyas Iyer
  5. Manish Pandey
  6. Hardik Pandya
  7. Washington Sundar
  8. Deepak Chahar
  9. Navdeep Saini
  10. Yuzvendra Chahal
  11. Jasprit Bumrah

One more thing was that, maybe Suryakumar Yadav could’ve also given a chance. Harbhajan Singh also reacted to SKY’s exclusion.

Manoj Tiwary felt that Axar Patel could’ve also been given a chance. And Axar did perform well in the IPL, but one thing is that everyone can’t be selected in the squad.

Net Bowlers

BCCI also gave the names of the net bowlers who will be travelling with the team to Australia.

Overall, this looks a good squad.

Last time when India toured Australia in 2018-19, India didn’t lose any series across formats.

Indian fans will be hoping that the India squad repeat the heroics of 2018-19 Tour of Australia.
