England Cricket: Who Is The Best T20 Batsmen Ever?

England have some amazing T20 batsmen at the moment. Jason Roy, Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow make up a formidable trio. Jonny Bairstow recently dominated the 2019 IPL for the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

In fact, England are blessed with talent in batting in their entire T20 line-up. Adil Rashid, Jofra Archer, Chris Jordan all offer a reasonable batting option towards the latter half of the innings.

But, who are England Cricket’s top 5 best T20 batsmen of all-time?

5. Alex Hales

Alex Hales is still one of England Cricket’s most destructive batsman in the T20 format. Despite being dropped for trust reasons and drug usage, Hales has still performed to a high level in franchise cricket. He has scored over 7000 T20 runs at a batting average of 30. His strike rate of 143 is very strong, but only his day he can surpass that easily.

He has been one of the best players for his county Nottinghamshire in the T20 Blast and has also had success in the Big Bash League. His T20 average for England is marginally better than his overall T20 record. At the 2014 World T20, Alex Hales biffed 116 against eventual champions Sri Lanka in the group stages.

4. Luke Wright

Luke Wright is perhaps England’s forgotten man in T20 Cricket. In 317 games, Wright has scored over 7000 T20 runs at a batting average of 29. His strike rate of 143 is also very healthy. He represented England between 2007 and 2014, but could never establish a place in the T20 squad.

He has become instrumental to his franchises, not least the Sussex Sharks in the T20 Blast. Wright has also played for other various franchise teams including the Melbourne Stars and the Pune Warrious India.

3. Eoin Morgan

Eoin Morgan has helped revolutionise England’s white-ball cricket in the past 5 years, post the 2015 Cricket World Cup. His amazing captaincy has been at the heart of this revival. However, as a batsman Eoin Morgan is right up there with the very best that England have ever produced in T20 Cricket.

Morgan has scored over 6000 runs in T20 Cricket at a batting average of 27 and at a strike rate of 133. On his day, he is able to single-handedly win his team a game with the bat. His switch hits and reverse hits have become a feature of his game and he hits the ball with terrific power.

2. Kevin Pietersen

Kevin Pietersen will always be remembered for encouraging English players to participate in the IPL and other franchise based tournaments. He helped develop the amazing T20 team that England Cricket have at their disposal today.

However, his biggest achievement for England in the format, will be his performance at the 2010 World T20. Pietersen was the player of the tournament, as England won their first and still only World T20 title. He scored 248 runs at a batting average of 62 and at a strike rate of 138.

Pietersen scored four consecutive scores of fourty-plus, including the semi-final and the final. An awesome batsman, who at his peak was among the very best in T20 cricket.

1. Jos Buttler

Jos Buttler is undoubtedly England’s Best T20 batsman of all-time.

In 252 games, Buttler has scored 5782 runs for his various franchises at a batting average of 30. His strike rate of 145 is also very healthy. Buttler is a versatile T20 batsman, who can play either as an opening batsman or can slot in the middle-order as a finisher. For England Cricket, he has played some crucial knocks in T20 Cricket, including at the 2016 World T20.

At the World T20 in 2016, Buttler scored 191 runs at a batting average of 47.75 and a strike rate of 159. In six games, Buttler scored above 30 four times to propel England to the final, where they were narrowly beaten by the West Indies.

In franchise cricket, he has been crucial for both the Mumbai Indians and the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL – at the top of the order. Buttler opened with Parthiv Patel and helped the Mumbai Indians to their third IPL title in 2017.
