Bob Willis Trophy – Somerset Ease To Victory

All-rounder Jamie Overton starred with both bat and ball in the Bob Willis Trophy as Somerset completed a resounding 167-run win over Northamptonshire. This, incredibly inside two action-packed days.

An eventful match at the County Ground finished in style on the second evening. Northants, still reeling from being skittled for 67 in their first innings, succumbed to their visitors and lost their final six wickets for six runs in 24 balls to be dismissed for 154. This was in their pursuit of an unlikely victory target of 322.

Somerset won the toss and chose to bat. Although, that quickly looked the wrong decision. After bowling Somerset out for 166, thanks to five wickets from Ben Sanderson, the hosts would have been optimistic about their chances.

However, in response, Northants were rolled for only 67. Ben Curran the only man with even a molecule of credit with his 35. Craig Overton with four wickets in a dismal Northants batting display.

21 Wickets In A Day

With a surprise lead of 99, Somerset set about setting a challenging target for their hosts and they had to Overton brothers to thank as both passed 50. Jamie Overton top-scoring with 68 to set Northants 322 to win.

A Better Fight From Northants

The home side put up a better fight on Sunday albeit ultimately in vain. This time Ricardo Vasconcelos top-scoring with a well made 52 before his wicket brought about the demise of his sides batting effort. Eventually bowled out for 154, some 167 short of their target. Jamie Overton again the pick of the bunch with his four wickets to wrap up a convincing win for the visitors.

The Bob Willis Trophy First Round – Summary And Round-Up Of Fixtures

An Improvement Required

Firstly, Jamie Overton has never played international cricket before. His record in first class cricket is decent, however. But it probably isn’t good enough yet to be in the reckoning for an England call-up. He averages just under 30 with the ball and under 20 with the bat in first class cricket.

If Jamie Overton continues to perform well in the Bob Willis Trophy for Somerset, a call-up may not be far away.

His twin brother, Craig Overton, in fact has been capped previously by England. He has a much better first class record, averaging 25 with the ball and 21 with the bat. Craig Overton played his last test in the 2019 Ashes series at Emirates Old Trafford against Australia.

Lastly, the round-up of the rest of the Bob Willis Trophy fixtures will be available on Wednesday.
