England v Pakistan – The Mental Strength Of Jos Buttler Key to Victory

England were inspired by Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes on the fourth day of the first test at Manchester 2020.

England Inspired By Jos Buttler

Jos Buttler played his greatest ever test innings to steer England to a famous win in the 1st Test against Pakistan.

Buttler showed remarkable resilience to score 75 in the winning chase. He had a poor match with the gloves, and he knew it. He was potentially playing for his place. And he delivered with aplomb.

Intent and Purpose

In his post match Sky Sports interview, Buttler said he had a clarity of purpose when he came to the crease. He knew what he had to do. His objective was clear. At 117-5 England were on the brink of defeat.

Shaheen produced the delivery of the match to dismiss Ollie Pope with an unplayable lifter. The watching Chris Woakes must have feared the worst as he strode to the crease.

But man of the match Chris Woakes also played a sublime innings. Why Pakistan did not test the England all-rounder more with the short ball is a mystery. But Woakes was equal to everything that Pakistan did bowl.

Jos Buttler set the tone and the pace with his courageous innings and in doing so exhibited a mental strength of world class levels.

Too often in his career, Jos Buttler appears confused about his role in the test side. He struggles with the tempo of his innings, in contrast to his finisher role in the ODI side.

But on a sultry Saturday afternoon in Manchester, Buttler played with the perfect tempo. The tempo was set by playing with intent and purpose. Buttler switched into One Day mode.

The England Leader – Jos Buttler

Jos Buttler is a valued leader in the England dressing room, and now we know why. He is a match winner with strong mental fortitude. He may not be the best wicket keeper in England but he is one of the best batsmen. His innings of 75 runs was the most impressive of his test career. Who would drop him now?

Ben Foakes surely was on the minds of the selectors midway through this test match. Jos Buttler had a torrid time with the gloves in this game. But such a match-winning innings now surely means that Ben Foakes will struggle to make the side. The only likelihood of both playing would be when England tour the Subcontinent.

England tour India in early 2021 and Jos Buttler and Ben Foakes could be numbers 6 and 7. Both are excellent players of spin.
