A 14 Man Squad Selected For The England vs Ireland ODI’s
The England vs Ireland ODI’s will start on the 30th of July 2020. In this article, we will be previewing the ODI series.
According to The England and Wales Cricket Board a 14 man squad has been selected to take on Ireland in the three-match ODI series. Three reserve players have also been chosen. No players from the test match team have been selected as the games will clash with the preparations for the Pakistan test match series. England vs Pakistan starts on the 5th of August 2020.
The England Lions beat Ireland in the warm-up game that was played recently. Ireland scored 296 runs in their 50-overs. However, England chased this down comfortably. They finished on 297-3 in under 35 overs. Phil Salt scored a century and James Vince scored a half-century.
So what players have made the squad and who are the unlucky omissions for the England vs Ireland ODI’s?
Tom Banton Features In England vs Ireland ODI’s

Tom Banton is a highly promising batsman. In fact, he has made his name playing in various T20 leagues around the world. He had a superb T20 blast 2020 for Brisbane Heat. Banton also played really well for Somerset in the 2019 Natwest T20 Blast.
James Taylor is the selector of the England squad. He views Tom Banton as someone with very high potential and says that “Banton is one of a number of players who we are looking to develop, in order to further strengthen our limited-overs squad.”
Tom Banton recently played in the middle-order against South Africa, but he could revert back to his opening slot for the England vs Ireland ODI’s that start on Thursday. He was perhaps a sure pick in England’s ODI Squad.

Joe Denly Rewarded For Good ODI Form

Joe Denly top-scored for England at Newlands in the first ODI against South Africa in 2020. In fact, he held the side together, after the middle-order crumbled post the wickets of Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow. He was the also the highest run-scorer for England in the ODI series with 153 runs.
As a result, Joe Denly keeps his place in the side, despite being dropped from the test match team for Zak Crawley. He will feature in the England vs Ireland ODI’s and most likely bat in the middle-order as the player to guide the innings while the stroke makers bat around him.

David Willey Back In Squad

David Willey was overlooked for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. However, he has managed to win back a place for the England vs Ireland ODI’s with the regular bowlers absent. David Willey is a very handy ODI player. He has the ability to swing the new ball and pick up wickets upfront.
Plus he is a great fielder and can also smash the ball out of the park, later in the innings. His main criticism has been that once the ball stops moving, he can be targeted by opposition teams later in the innings.

Phil Salt Misses Out

Phil Salt scored a superb century in the warm-up game against Ireland for England A. Despite this, he misses out on selection for the three-match One-Day International series. England have chosen the trio of Jonny Bairstow, James Vince and Tom Banton in their squad instead. Which of these will open the batting depends on how England choose to structure their team.
Perhaps his List A average of just over 32 is responsible for him not being selected in England’s ODI Squad. However, it would not make any sense then for him to be picked in the warm-up game.
Phil Salt has been a consistent performer for Sussex County Cricket Club. He strikes at nearly 105. Like Tom Banton, he also had a very good Big Bash League 2020. His form with the Adelaide Strikers was very good and he can count himself unlucky to miss out on selection for the England vs Ireland ODI’s starting on Thursday.
No Room For Sam Hain – England vs Ireland ODI’s

Sam Hain has the highest List A average in the history of the format for any player who has played at least 50 games. He averages 59.78, which is even higher than Virat Kohli. Therefore, it is incredibly surprising that with the regulars absent, he still does not make the squad for the England vs Ireland ODI series.
Ideally, he should be in England’s ODI squad because he is such a consistent batsman and could play the same role that Joe Root did in England’s World Cup-winning campaign in 2019.
