AB De Villiers and Aiden Markram both scored quick-fire half-centuries to help the Eagles to a comfortable victory in the 3TC & Solidarity Cup. De Villiers started off slowly, scoring only 11 of 7 balls. However, he played some vintage AB shots to register 61 from just 24 balls.
Aiden Markram, coming back from a long injury layoff, also smashed 70 from just 33 balls. These two were primarily responsible for the Eagle’s score of 160-4 in just 12 overs.

AB De Villiers was in scintillating form and helped draw large audiences – especially from the subcontinent, just to watch him bat. He looked as sharp as ever and could be crucial to South Africa’s chances at the World T20 in 2021.
Kites Flying High at the Solidarity Cup
Dwaine Pretorius put on a stellar display at the Solidarity Cup to register a half-century off just 17 balls. However, it was not enough. Despite support from David Miller, they could not match the score of AB’s eagles.
Anrich Nortje from the Mr D Food Kites was very impressive. He picked up the wicket of AB De Villiers. His overall bowling figures were 2-27.
Dwaine Pretorius would like to continue his form for South Africa. He played extremely well at the 3 Team Competition and showed that he has the batting prowess required. He has been good so far in the T20s he has played for South Africa.
In order to feature at the World T20, he will need to consistently perform in the top order. Doing so will allow him to slot in at number 6. His bowling is not his stronger suit in limited-overs. However, his tight wicket-to-wicket bowling could help him cement a place in the South Africa test line-up, after a strong showing at both SuperSport Park Centurion and Newlands Cape Town.
Kingfishers Win Bronze at the 3TC Event
Faf Du Plessis’ team won bronze at the Solidarity Cup, only scoring 113/5 from their 12 overs. Janneman Malan top-scored with 31. Both Faf Du Plessis (28) and Reeza Hendricks (21) also played well but could not prevent their side from finishing third.
Glenton Stuurman was very impressive at the Solidarity Cup. He picked up 2/26. He could be a future Proteas player if he continues to bowl well. All in all, the three teams played really well and raised a solid amount of money for charity – which was the main point of this event.
England versus the West Indies was rained out today and therefore this event helped prove the cricket that was required to keep fans entertained. Andile Phehlukwayo also wore an inner that stated “Black Lives Matter” to further emphasise the point on racial equality.
South Africa was to play three T20 Internationals against India at the end of August. However, as the coronavirus is still a major threat, it is unlikely that these T20s will continue. Therefore, it is important that the South Africa players managed to play some sort of cricket game.
South Africa will look to strengthen their T20 side and hope to find the correct combination in time for the World T20. The event is likely to happen in 2021. If South Africa can find a strong balanced team, they could have a real chance of winning their first ICC World T20. The Solidarity Cup 3TC showed that they have the calibre of players required.
