IPL Auction 2020
The IPL Auction 2020 took place in Kolkata on the 19th December 2019. It was a relatively small auction with only 62 players being purchased. 29 of these players were overseas stars. Players such as Pat Cummins, Chris Morris and Glenn Maxwell attracted huge bids from franchises during the auction.
Historically, the most expensive foreign players have often underwhelmed. Despite receiving in excess of 20 crores, it is probably fair to say that Ben Stokes has underperformed in the last two IPL seasons. In fact, shrewd or inexpensive buys often result in the most success. Thus, we must ask the question; what were the best overseas buys in the IPL Auction 2020?
Chris Lynn – Best Buy During The IPL Auction 2020
During the IPL Auction 2020, Chris Lynn was sold at his base price of 2 crores to the Mumbai Indians. The hard-hitting batsman has accumulated nearly 1300 IPL runs to date. Given that he averages 34 and strikes at 141, it is fair to say that he has been consistently destructive.
He is likely to enjoy the Mumbai surface due to the true bounce that it offers. Plus, he offers excellent squad depth to an already-strong team.
Chris Lynn is a superb batsman and has prospered in the Indian Premier League for the Kolkata Knight Riders. The other benefit that the Mumbai Indians receive is that Lynn forces Quinton De Kock to also perform to a high standard again.
Quinton De Kock had a fabulous 2019 IPL and paved the way for the Mumbai Indians to win their fourth title. He scored 529 runs in the season at a batting average of 35.26 and at a strike rate of 132.91. Mumbai Indians will want Quinton De Kock to fire again and having a superb player in Chris Lynn as a back-up will hopefully persuade De Kock to play to the same standards.
Chris Lynn has played 184 T20 matches overall. He has scored 5096 runs at a batting average of 32.66 and has a strike rate of 144.15. This makes him a super prospect for the Mumbai Indians. At a price of just 2 crores, he is comfortably the best buy in the IPL Auction 2020.
In the 2019 IPL, the Kolkata Knight Riders failed to make the playoffs. It was the first time they had failed to reach the last four since 2015. A key factor in this was their opening partnership. Sunil Narine only scored 143 runs opening the batting – falling well short of his 357 runs in 2018. This left unnecessary pressure on either Shubman Gill or Chris Lynn, resulting in both aborting their natural instincts.
Since scoring 549 runs in the 2019 T20 Blast, Tom Banton has not looked back. He has played in various T20 leagues around the world with great success. Such leagues include the Big Bash League and the Bangladesh Premier League.
His overall T20 average of 30 and a strike rate of 157 are both very strong statistics. Plus, a purchase price of only 1 crore makes him an absolute steal. KKR will be hoping for him to build consistent opening partnerships with Shubman Gill.
Tom Banton is still relatively new to T20 cricket. He has only played 34 T20 matches overall. In these games, he has scored 944 runs at a batting average of 30.45 and at a strike rate of 157.33. He was excellent for the Brisbane Heat during the Big Bash League 2020.
The fact that England has chosen him though, despite playing such a small number of games, shows his talent. Tom Banton could be a long term opening batsman for the Kolkata Knight Riders. He does not have to start the season either. He is only 21 years of age and could play a handful of selected games to help him acclimatise to conditions for the future. A good pick by the Kolkata Knight Riders during the IPL Auction 2020.
The only bowler on this list from the IPL Auction 2020.
Josh Hazlewood is perhaps very underrated in T20 Cricket. Be it at the international level or franchise level. One of the reasons behind this, is probably that he has played very few T20 games. This is because the Australian Cricket Board has often rested their fast bowlers in anticipation for big test series.
However, Hazlewood has a fantastic record. He has played 35 games and taken 42 wickets at a bowling average of 24.11. Hazlewood also has an excellent economy rate of just 7.56.
The Chennai Super Kings has struggled at times on fast and bouncy pitches outside Chepauk – especially when Lungi Ngidi has been injured. If CSK decides to play both Lungi Ngidi and Josh Hazlewood on quicker pitches, their bowling away from home could be far stronger then before. They did it to good effect in their title-winning 2018 IPL season. Deepak Chahar and Lungi Ngidi caused chaos.
CSK managed to purchase Josh Hazlewood for just 2 crores at the IPL Auction 2020. Given that other franchises have paid considerably more for overseas fast bowlers, this could prove to be a steal.
The only problem is that Hazlewood does not bat enough and therefore could enhance the tail. CSK has often prided themselves on being able to bat all the way down till numbers 9 and 10. However, if Ngidi and Hazlewood bowl the opposition out or restrict them to a low score, their batting prowess will probably not be required.
Can Josh Hazlewood provide the Chennai Super Kings such firepower? Will he haul them to their fourth Indian Premier League title in 2020?
Three excellent buys during the IPL Auction 2020.
