England Batting Woes?

Ahh, the good old England Batting woes. We don’t see them much anymore?

Pakistan captain Azhar Ali has said that when their series gets underway in August, he and his bowlers will target the hosts’ batting. Pinpointing the top order as an area of weakness his side will look to exploit.

The tour itself has this week been thrown into some doubt when no fewer than 11 members of the Pakistan touring squad tested positive for Covid-19 before they were due to fly out today.

However, Pakistan captain Ali has not been short in confidence ahead of the tour. Calling England’s top order ”fragile”, in truth he may have a point. England has struggled to find a settled top order since the retirement of Alastair Cook in 2018.

Before leaving for England Azhar Ali held a press conference, in which he praised the hosts ”brilliant in their own conditions” bowling attack.

It is those conditions that may prove to be the sternest test for Ali’s men. Winning Test matches on tour is difficult anywhere in world cricket. Even more so as a visiting sub-continent team to what can be alien English conditions.

England Batting: Can Pakistan Exploit?

Pakistan has a reasonable recent record in England. They are the only visiting team to score 500 plus in a Test in England since 2016, Azhar Ali suggesting that the nations other successes, notably the 2017 Champions Trophy, could provide them with the belief required.

Pakistan travels with a young talented bowling line up who will be desperate to prove their captain right and exploit any frailties in the England line up. Despite their obvious talent neither Naseem Shah nor Shaheen Shah Afridi has experience of playing in England. Between them they have only played 12 Test Matches, by comparison, England duo James Anderson and Stuart Broad have amassed 289 Tests.

Pakistan’s 20-man initial squad arrives on Sunday afternoon in Manchester and will undergo a 14-day quarantine period at New Road, Worcestershire. A further arrival of players is expected in the coming weeks. Those players will have to produce two negative results for Covid-19 before travelling.

The three-Test series is due to begin on August 5th at Old Trafford, Manchester. Closely following the completion of the Test’s are three T20 internationals. All three T20s are scheduled at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton. Every match will be behind closed doors.

England batting woes have ceased to exist over the past few months. Despite this, there have still been glimpses of potential collapses.
