Fakhar Zaman Makes History For Pakistan In Zimbabwe

Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman has made history today by becoming the first Pakistani player to hit a double century in ODI cricket. The previous highest score by a Pakistani batsman in ODI cricket came in 1997, when Saeed Anwar hit 194 against India in Chennai.

Zaman’s innings today propelled him into an elite club, as he hit the eighth ODI double century in the history of the game. His final score of 210 has made his innings the fifth highest ODI individual score of all time.

Rohit Sharma currently holds the record for the most ODI double centuries, having scored three, and also boasts the highest ODI individual score of 264*.

Pakistan ultimately finished on 399/1 in their fifty overs, but put on 304 runs for their opening partnership. This stand between Zaman and Imam Ul-Haq is the highest ever opening partnership in ODI cricket, beating Sanath Jayusuria and Upul Tharanaga’s 286 run opening stand in 2006.

This imperious batting display from Pakistan could not have come at a better time. Ramiz Raja, a former player and now a pundit, had previously criticised Pakistan for their lack of a brutal batting display in their ODI’s against Zimbabwe.

It is almost as if Pakistan were riled up by his remarks and sought to prove that they are one of the best limited overs sides in the world.

Most of the cricketing world’s attention has been focused on the ODI series between England and India, with those two teams being ranked number one and two in the ICC ODI Rankings. However, with the World Cup fast approaching, Pakistan have sent out a reminder that the winners of the 2017 Champions Trophy should be considered as one of the favourites for the World Cup next year.
