South Africa vs India: ODI Series Preview

With the test series a thing of the past, South Africa and India now turn their attention to the limited overs format.

The hosts, fresh off of a series triumph in the tests, will look to do the double. The selected squad has a good blend of youth and experience, with the only notable omission, that being of Farhaan Behardien, who has been outstanding in domestic cricket again this year. The as yet uncapped Khaya Zondo takes his place.

The home side was dealt a blow when superstar AB De Villiers was ruled out for the first three games due to injury. They, however, can still field a world class batting unit. Quinton De Kock, although in lean form in the tests, remain one of the games preeminent one-day batters. David Miller provides hitting power unlike any other, and the experience of Hashim Amla, Faf Du Plessis and JP Duminy will be crucial. The squad is littered with all-rounders, with the canny Phehlukwayo a shoe-in for the main all-rounder spot. The bowling attack remains a work in progress, as numerous options have been used of late. Kagiso Rabada is likely to be the only constant over the six matches. Imran Tahir, in the spin department, picks himself. He will again be depended on to weave his magic in the middle overs.

India will be brimming with confidence, as they are a stellar limited overs unit. Their batting boasts power from top to bottom. Rohit Sharma will relish getting the blue clothing on again, and he mixes brute force with elegance. Virat Kohli is the best batter in the world, and he will tear an attack apart with surgical precision. Down the order, the brash Hardik Pandya can hit a long ball. The bowling is similarly well stocked, with Jaspirit Bumrah an exceptional white ball bowler, and an expert at death bowling. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami would want to continue their excellent tours, while the spin of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav is something that the hosts would not have seen much of.

All in all, it should be a great series. India start as favourites, because they have the most settled unit.

Prediction: India 4-2 winners.
