It’s been an interesting first half to say the least! Here are my thoughts from week six in college football:

Michigan 14, Michigan State 10

Here’s irony for you: Michigan’s defense, which lost 10 of last year’s 11 starters, is number one in the country. It’s the offense that has struggled. In fairness, quarterback Wilton Speight was injured early in the team’s last game and did not return; even after a bye week, he wasn’t able to face the Spartans. It was announced yesterday that the injury is three fractured vertebrae and he is in fact done for the year.

Prior to yesterday, the Wolverines’ run game had actually been fairly good outside of the red zone. Ann Arbor was experiencing horrendous weather yesterday, and I thought Michigan’s ground attack would be a bigger advantage than it was. They have a lot of depth at the position. They’re going to need it going forward. Credit to Sparty for grinding out the W.

LSU 17, Florida 16

Man, did the Tigers ever need that win. A week after losing to non-Power Five Troy, there was discussion about the amount required to buy out coach Ed Orgeron. (For the record, that amount is A LOT. He’s going nowhere.) I’m not going to say that LSU looked great yesterday, but it was a definite improvement. Devin White is a beast on the LSU defense. The sophomore linebacker led the team with 13 total tackles and a sack.

Western Michigan 71, Buffalo 68

Nope, not a typo. Buffalo now holds the FBS record for most points in a losing effort. I don’t know what the record is for number of overtimes, but this game must have come close to breaking that too after requiring seven extra frames to come to an end.

The craziest stat from this game has to be Buffalo’s run-pass ratio. Quarterback Drew Anderson threw for 597 yards and seven touchdowns while the team rushed for 86 yards. Again, not a typo.

Surprise(s) of the Week

NC State 39, Louisville 25 NC State may be a team to start paying attention to. The defense in particular had a rare level of success in slowing Louisville’s Lamar Jackson.

Iowa State 38, Oklahoma 31 It seems like every year, Oklahoma has one loss that’s unexpected at best and inexplicable at worst. This one definitely falls in the latter category. The Cyclones last beat the Sooners in 1990, and I’m pretty sure one of the commentators said no player on the field had been born then. (Side note: WOW I’m old).

So that was week six in college football. I promise a longer column next week once I’m back in the USA and can watch more games. Remember to check the LWOS Top 25 coming later today. Thanks for reading and have a great week!

Week Six in College Football Hard to believe the regular season is half over.
