Here are my thoughts on week five in college football:

Things We Learned In College: Week Five in College Football

Georgia 41, Tennessee 0

Well I certainly didn’t see that coming. The Vols got off to a pretty bad start, throwing an interception on the very first play of the game. They held the Bulldogs to a field goal on that possession, but it was all downhill from there. The question is whether this was a bad enough loss to cost Butch Jones– already on a pretty warm seat- his job. It was the Vols’ first shutout loss at home since 1994.

Georgia, for their part, looks pretty good for a team that lost their starting QB in the opener. In the last two weeks, the Dawgs have outscored Mississippi State and Tennessee by a total of 72-3. Their defense held Tennessee under 100 yards rushing and passing. I think it’s safe to call Georgia the front runners in the SEC East at this point.

Florida State 26, Wake Forest 19

Who would have thought we’d be at week five in college football before Florida State got their first win? Granted, they had two games cancelled due to Hurricane Jose. But we came very close to the ‘Noles being winless going into week six. It took a TD pass from freshman quarterback James Blackman in the last minutes of play to secure the win for FSU. Going into this game, the Seminoles were unranked for the first time since 2011.

Florida 38, Vanderbilt 24

Speaking of the Sunshine State, Florida running backs scored five touchdowns against Vandy. The Gators didn’t have a rushing score from a running back in their previous eight games. The bad news is that quarterback Luke Del Rio broke his collarbone and is done for the year.

Alabama 66, Ole Miss 3

So you think the Tide was a bit ticked off about those upsets the last few years?

Clemson 31, Virginia Tech 17

I won’t say much about the game, because I’m sure it’s been covered extensively, but the Hokies have the best entrance in college football. Judging by my Twitter feed, I’m not the only non-VT fan who gets goosebumps from Enter Sandman.

The interesting thing about this game, to me, was that most of the stats were fairly even. The biggest difference was in the turnover margin- three for VT, none for Clemson.

Surprise of the Week

Obviously, it’s LSU 21, Troy 24. I literally don’t even know what to say, except that I don’t think this is what they had in mind when they fired Les Miles.

Can LSU put Mike the Tiger on the field on defense? Would that be a penalty?

So that was week five in college football. Thanks for reading, and remember to look for the LWOS Top 25 rankings later today!

Yesterday’s games certainly ended on a shocking note.
