While several Power Four programs pursued Meeks, Oregon State convinced him it offered the right combination of coaching, scheme, and long-term development.

Why Oregon State Stood Out

JaMarcus Shephard Set the Tone

Every recruiting process has a moment when one program begins to separate itself. For Meeks, that happened during his first meeting with Oregon State head coach JaMarcus Shephard. Meeks talked to Last Word about that process.

“I would say the defining moment would be the energy Coach Shep had the moment I met him,” Meeks said. That relationship opened the door, but Oregon State’s defensive philosophy ultimately reinforced the decision.

“I like their vertical and up-field play style, and that’s the main thing I pride myself on is playing on the other side of the line of scrimmage,” Meeks said. That approach fits the way Meeks has built his game. His junior season produced 94 tackles, 27 tackles for loss, and 10.5 sacks (247Sports) because he consistently attacked offenses before plays had a chance to develop instead of reacting after the snap.

Playing Fast Starts Before the Snap

Meeks believes his game is built on more than athletic ability. “I think my speed, strength, and IQ sets me apart because I was taught from a young age, film is important.” That preparation carries over long before the football is snapped.

“The visual keys I use before the play happens so I can get an edge on the opposing team before the play starts.” Meeks studies formations, offensive line alignments, and pre-snap tendencies because he believes recognizing a play early allows him to play faster once the ball is in motion. That preparation complements the physical traits that already make him disruptive near the line of scrimmage.

He also pointed to another part of his game that defines the way he plays. “The chip that I play with on my shoulder, my strength, and my twitchiness,” Meeks said. That mindset shows up throughout his film. Meeks rarely waits for blocks to reach him. Instead, he works to create penetration early and force offensive linemen to recover.

Still Looking to Improve

Despite his production, Meeks already knows what he wants to improve before arriving in Corvallis. “I would probably say my hands because you can never have enough of it,” Meeks said. Adding more hand counters should complement the burst and strength that already define his game. As offensive linemen become bigger and more technically refined at the college level, winning with technique becomes just as important as winning with athletic ability.

Oregon State Saw More Than Recruiting Rankings

One part of Oregon State’s recruiting approach resonated throughout the process. “It meant a lot knowing a team can actually see through the rankings and having a coach that believes in you that is going to develop the player,” Meeks said. That belief mattered because Meeks has always trusted what he puts on film more than where recruiting services place him. Oregon State evaluated the player it saw on Friday nights and projected how those traits would translate to the college game.

Asked what Beavers fans should notice first once he arrives on campus, Meeks did not hesitate. “I hope my get-off and strength jumps off the screen,” he said.

If his junior season is any indication, Oregon State landed a defensive lineman who wants to spend more time in the opponent’s backfield than his own. The Beavers saw that style throughout the recruiting process, and Meeks believes Corvallis gives him the best opportunity to continue developing it.

Oregon State continued building its 2027 recruiting class by landing Aledo defensive lineman Tymon Meeks, one of Texas’ most productive front-seven defenders.
