With just one minute left, he intercepted a pass that helped Nebraska defeat Miami in the Gotham Bowl. In 1963, Brown’s senior year, he was chosen as a unanimous All-American, making him the first Black Cornhusker to receive that honor. That season, Nebraska finished 10-1 and won its first conference championship since 1940.

In the Orange Bowl against Auburn, Brown made a powerful block that pushed his opponent eight yards down the field. This opened a path for Dennis Claridge to run 68 yards for a touchdown on just the second play of the game, helping Nebraska win 13-7. On defense, Brown played linebacker and finished with 49 tackles, one interception, and two fumble recoveries.

After college, Brown played offensive tackle in the pros and was named all-pro seven times. He played for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1964 to 1968, the Los Angeles Rams from 1969 to 1970, and the Oakland Raiders from 1971 to 1973.

Brown was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004. That same year, Nebraska retired his No. 64 jersey.

Another Great # 64, Casey Hampton, Texas

Casey Hampton was a two-time first-team All-American and earned the title of Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year in 2000. He was also a three-time All-Big 12 performer from 1998 to 2000 and became the first defensive lineman in school history to lead the team in tackles for two straight seasons, recording 101 as a junior and 78 as a senior.

In Hampton’s last two years, he was a key part of one of the best defenses in the country.

In 1999, the Longhorns ranked sixth in the nation for total defense, allowing just 286.6 yards per game, and improved to seventh in 2000 with 278.3 yards per game. Hampton is fifth on the UT all-time list for tackles for loss with 54, including 39 in his final two seasons. He wrapped up his career in Austin with 329 tackles, 9.5 sacks, 56 quarterback pressures, nine forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries.

Hampton was picked by the Pittsburgh Steelers as the 19th overall in the first round of the 2001 NFL Draft. Over 12 seasons, Hampton was selected to five Pro Bowls, tying Earl Campbell, Bobby Layne, Bud McFadin, and Tommy Nobis for the most Pro Bowl appearances by a Longhorn.

Editor’s Note: The countdown to college football kickoff has been a series on the Last Word on College Football social media platforms for the past 9 years. They consisted of a photo and a small blurb for each player, with the jersey corresponding to the number of days until kickoff. The rank of the players is sourced from articles by Bleacher Report, Fox Sports, and The Athletic.
