The 2027 prospect is LSU’s second running back commitment in two days. The 247Sports Composite ranks Franklin Parish High School star as the 12th best running back in the country and the sixth best overall prospect in Louisiana. On that note, Martin is fifth Louisiana native to commit to the Tigers for this cycle.

Trey Martin Commits to LSU

Road to Trey Martin’s Commitment to LSU

Most recruiting pundits pegged Alabama as the favorite for the bulk of Martin’s recruitment. However, Lane Kiffin and LSU Running Backs coach Kevin Smith had already established a relationship with him while at Ole Miss. They continued to aggressively pursue him after making the move to LSU. Both coaches reached out to Martin within their first week in Baton Rouge, cementing his place as a priority in the 2027 class.

Martin frequently visited LSU during the Spring, along with fellow Franklin Parish running back and 2028 national recruit DJ Neal. The home-state team continued to gain ground in 2026 as Martin spent more time in Baton Rouge and around LSU commitments. The decorated prospect is the second Franklin Parish product to commit to the Tigers in two years, as cornerback Dezyrian Ellis is now a freshman at LSU.

Florida eventually passed Alabama as LSU’s closest competition for Martin’s commitment after an extravagant official visit a few weeks ago. He also visited Ole Miss recently, but the decision came down to LSU and Florida. The LSU coaching staff’s plan for his role in the offense played a significant part in the Tigers winning out on his commitment.

Martin as a Prospect

Based on appearance alone, Martin is an impressive running back prospect at a compactly built 6’-0” and 202 pounds. He’s a highly explosive back who gets to top speed quickly and effortlessly. While he flashes the ability to elude, Martin is a decisive, one-cut runner with a rare combination of speed and power.

He’s an all-around back with the patience and physical nature to run inside and the vision to bounce plays outside. Martin displays an extraordinary burst once creases open. The Franklin Parish offense doesn’t require much out of him as a receiver, but he’s displayed the ability to track the ball and make tough catches when leaked out of the backfield for downfield targets.

LSU’s 2027 Running Back Class

Thanks to a recent surge, the Tigers are now up to 12 commitments for the 2027 class. Three of the 12 are running backs, and Martin’s commitment to LSU has likely completed the running back class for this cycle. Martin is the first in-state running back to commit to Kiffin’s Tigers. The Tigers’ class isn’t ranked in the 247Sports Composite’s top 20 due to its size, but its average recruit rating is elite.

Although each of LSU’s running backs is highly recruited, they all bring different skills to the room. South Carolina native Tre Segarra is a thicker body type at 210 pounds. LSU’s first running back commitment, Brennen Lacey, is a former receiver who lines up all over the field for Frisco High School in the Dallas area. This is a diverse and complete group. The size of this running back class suggests the current staff does not plan to lean as heavily on the transfer portal going forward.

With a quarterback and elite skill on board for 2027, the recruiting attention on the offensive side of the ball now shifts up front to the offensive line. The Tigers gained two offensive line commitments this week in Amaziah Siale and Terrance Smith. Expect the staff to continue to bolster the interior offensive line, specifically with elite in-state prospect Albert Simien.

Main Image: Matthew Hinton-Imagn Images

The Tigers’ hot streak on the recruiting trail continues, as four-star running back and Winnsboro native Trey Martin commits to LSU.
