We are ALSO 12 Saturdays away from a weekend full of college football. \u00a0The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2026\/06\/05\/85-days-away-from-college-football-kickoff\/\" target=\"_self\"> countdown<\/a> is moving right along. Today, we have Marcus Spears and Jerry Robinson. Two gifted athletes from opposite sides of the country. Enjoy reading more about their college careers as we continue counting down to the best season of the year&#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2026\/06\/04\/86-days-away-from-college-football-kickoff\/\" target=\"_self\">COLLEGE FOOTBALL<\/a>!<\/span><\/div>\n<h2>Marcus Spears Days Away From College Football Kickoff<\/h2>\n<div><span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/marcus-spears-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcus Spears<\/a> joined LSU as the top-ranked tight end prospect in the country. As a freshman in 2001, he played on both offense and defense, taking snaps at tight end, fullback, and defensive end. After the Mississippi State game, he mainly played defensive end. On offense, he caught two passes for 20 yards, including a 19-yard reception against Mississippi State. On defense, he finished the regular season with eight tackles and one sack.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span>During his sophomore year, Spears started 12 games. He ended the regular season with 46 tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss and three sacks. He also had 16 quarterback hurries, batted down two passes, and made two interceptions.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span>In 2003, as a junior Spears started all 14 games at defensive end for LSU. He earned First-Team All-SEC honors after making 49 tackles, with 13 tackles for a total loss of 72 yards. Spears recorded six sacks and 19 quarterback <\/span><span>pressures. He finished the season with at least one tackle for loss in eight of LSU\u2019s last nine games. In the Sugar Bowl against Oklahoma, Spears scored the game-winning points with a 20-yard interception return in the third quarter.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span>During his senior year in 2004, Spears was named a Consensus First-Team All-American. He also received First-Team All-America honors from the Walter Camp Foundation, the American Football Coaches Association, the Associated Press, and Collegefootballnews.com. Spears had one of the most impressive seasons ever for a defensive lineman at LSU. By the end of his college career, he had 152 total tackles, 34.5 tackles for loss, 19 sacks, and four interceptions, with two of those returned for touchdowns.<\/span><\/div>\n<h3>Another Great #84 Jerry Robinson<\/h3>\n<div><span>While at UCLA, Jerry Robinson began his freshman year as a wide receiver and switched to inside linebacker just before the Rose Bowl against Ohio State.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jerry-robinson-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jerry Robinson<\/a> was a standout linebacker and became the Pac-10&#8217;s first three-time consensus All-America pick from 1976 to 1978. He set a school record with 28 tackles in a single game against Air Force in 1976 and made 23 tackles against Southern California in 1977. He also had games with 21 and 20 tackles. Robinson finished his college career with 468 tackles, setting a UCLA record. He led the team in tackles each season with 161, 159, and 147. He returned three interceptions for touchdowns, with runs of 95, 72, and 69 yards. He helped the Bruins reach three bowl games in college.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span>Robinson was drafted in the first round of the 1979 NFL draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. The next year, he played in Super Bowl XV.
