The wide receiver room once again added true freshmen talent in its early-enrollee class. That talent has been on display consistently throughout the Spring, with one player standing out among the group. These are two players to watch at the receiver position during the annual “Dawgs After Dark” Spring game at UW.

UW Receivers to Watch at Spring Game

WR Justice Williams

One of the offseason pursuits of this Husky coaching staff was to find a player to step in for the departure of Denzel Boston. It looked to the transfer portal to land 6’-3” Christian Moss out of Kennesaw State. Still, he’s been limited this Spring. 6’-3” receiver and true freshman Jordan Clay was another receiver who flashed talent over the course of the month but was also limited in his availability. The receiver who performed the most consistently at that X-receiver role in April was a guy who’s been on the roster for three years now. That player was Justice Williams.

Listed at 6’-3” and 219 pounds, Williams has shown up for the receiver room in a multitude of ways. During Washington’s sixth practice of the month, Williams elevated for a corner end zone fade touchdown reception on a pass thrown by Elijah Brown. It was a contested catch, and the receiver high-pointed the football, pulling it away from the defender for the score. In one-on-ones the following week, Williams won back-to-back contested catch battles in the end zone for scores over the defender. In that same practice session, Williams also had a diving catch on a deep sideline pass from Kini McMillan.

Early this Spring, receivers coach Kevin Cummings described Williams as a player with the tools to fulfill the X-receiver role in this offense as a downfield threat. He showed that on several occasions early on. But in addition to his vertical presence, he needed to add another wrinkle to his skillset.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBJaeqomyD" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4896px; aspect-ratio: 4896/3264;" ></smartframe-embed>

Playing Small

“Justice is another one that’s a big physical player,” Cummings said. “I think Justice has to continue to learn his technique, continue when you’re a big receiver, like, you have to play big, but you also have to learn how to play small. So I think that’s what he’s sorting out right now. And he’s in a process for that.”

Over the final two weeks of practice, Williams did exactly that. In the short-range passing game and on throws over the middle, Williams was dependable. On multiple occasions this Spring, Williams went over the middle of the field on slants and mid-range passes. He used his size to create space in the middle of the defense, making him a big target for the quarterback. His physicality in the vertical passing game translates to the inside, where he can box out defenders, secure the catch, and fight through contact to gain positive yards. That physical skillset was on display during the team’s first scrimmage mid-way through the month. He pulled down a slant route from Brown, continued upfield, spun off a safety, breaking a tackle for additional yards. The play went for about 17 yards.

By the final week and a half of practice, Williams had earned starting reps with the offense. He started the team’s second scrimmage on April 25th and unofficially caught three passes for about 30 yards in the outing. The coaching staff has clearly taken note of his added skillset, and he’s delivered on expectations all month.

WR Trez Davis

After de-committing from Tulane in November of 2025, Trez Davis committed to Washington and signed a few weeks later in December of last year. The former four-star and sixth-ranked player out of Louisiana enrolled over the winter and quickly became a reliable target for the Husky quarterbacks during practice. The coaching staff noticed his talent right away. After just the fourth practice of the Spring, Cummings made sure to mention his progress.

“Trez Davis has been amazing,” Cummings said of the 6’-0” and 190-pound true freshman. “Trez has been awesome. [He] has done a heck of a job of learning the plays and applying them on the field. And so he’s the one that’s been, I would say, the furthest along so far.”

Presence Over The Middle

Davis had a 20-yard reception during the team’s first scrimmage of the Spring, where he lined up with the second-team offense. One of the things that stood out early on about the freshman is his fearless presence over the middle. Reminiscent of Dezmen Roebuck’s presence in the face of contact, Davis has caught passes in a similar light. During team periods this Spring, Davis has consistently demonstrated his hand strength on short-range passes over the middle of the formation. The true freshman is not afraid to extend for the football with defenders in his way. And he’s taken hard hits and made tough catches, hanging on to the football throughout.

As the Spring progressed, Davis earned time with the starting offense. Some of that has been due to the limited participants in the receiver room, but it’s also a testament to his production over the course of the month. He brings versatility to the room, with the skillset to line up on the outside and in the slot. As Roebuck demonstrated throughout this true freshman season, when lined up in the slot, the inside receiver position requires physicality. Davis has shown he’s capable of absorbing contact and working through the middle of the defense. During Friday’s Spring game at UW, he’ll be a player worth following because of how quickly he’s used his skill set to become a threat in this offense.

Main Photo: Nick Lemkau Last Word on College Football

Among Washington’s top performers throughout April, a third-year wide receiver has taken his game up a level, earning starting reps with the offense.
