{"id":8611,"date":"2017-09-17T10:01:24","date_gmt":"2017-09-17T14:01:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lwosoncfb.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/?p=8611"},"modified":"2017-09-16T21:41:36","modified_gmt":"2017-09-17T01:41:36","slug":"alabama-special-teams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2017\/09\/17\/alabama-special-teams\/","title":{"rendered":"Alabama Special Teams: A Special Part of the Process"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If it weren\u2019t for Alabama\u2019s Special Teams&#8230;<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A vast number of College Football pundits, Tide fans, opposing fans, and others have used the phrase \u201cIf it weren\u2019t for Bama\u2019s special teams\u2019 play\u201d ad naseum throughout the past year. So let&#8217;s for a minute pretend that <strong>Alabama<\/strong>\u2019s offense is riddled with 5 stars and the SEC Offensive Player of the year at quarterback. Let\u2019s pretend non-offensive touchdowns&#8211; or NOTS &#8211; haven\u2019t become as much a part of Alabama\u2019s consistent strategy as the Hurry Up No Huddle (HUNH) offense was for Auburn in 2011. The fact would still remain, Alabama\u2019s special teams is exhibiting a type of dominance on the football field rarely seen in sports. So, Alabama must continue to make plays on special teams consistently, whether they are playing <strong>LSU<\/strong> or<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/Game Day preview box: No. 1 Alabama vs. Fresno State\" target=\"_self\"> Fresno State.<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>It is no longer a fluke<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is no longer a fluke, a lucky play or even a a play that was just practiced.. Now, it was all hands on deck when it comes to covering kickoffs, punts, field goals and everything else. Point in case: Alabama\u2019s huge blocked field goal last week against <strong>Florida State<\/strong>. Head Coach <strong>Nick Saban<\/strong>\u2019s only words of guidance at the moment (the rest had been implemented in practice countless time) were: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;All right,\u201d Saban said, \u201clet&#8217;s go after it.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> According to starting RB <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/damien-harris-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Damien Harris<\/a> in the post-game interview:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We were bringing the house. All 11 players lining up knew it. When Florida State reached third-and-5, the group encircled special teams coach Joe Pannunzio, who relayed the call from Nick Saban.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up by 3 \u00a0against the No. 3 team in the country late in the third quarter, Alabama needed a big play. And that came in the form of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pTko8s-JE6I\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blocked punt by the starting RB <strong>Damien Harris<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Damien Harris talks win over Florida State\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dCun5i25OKY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe&#8217;d practiced it all week. We knew if we lined up a certain way, they would block it a certain way and that would leave a running alley for someone to go in and get the block. We didn&#8217;t know who it would be.\u201d &#8211; Damien Harris<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong>A Team Effort<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Harris blocked the punt,\u00a0five-star early-enrollee <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/dylan-moses-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dylan Moses<\/a> recovered it. The first to congratulate the pair was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aHtksImuD9U\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">running back <\/a><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/najee-harris-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Najee Harris<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 the best high school prospect in the 2017 recruiting class.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alabama has become known for playing their stars on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/alabama.247sports.com\/Article\/Alabama-Crimson-Tide-Football-2017-Offseason-Outlook-Special-tea-51526733\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">special teams.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All-American <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/minkah-fitzpatrick-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Minkah Fitzpatrick<\/a><\/strong> blocked the game-tying field goal as the first half expired. It was picked up and almost returned by Alabama&#8217;s new alpha dog on defense- <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/rashaan-evans-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rashaan Evans<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCoach always preaches all the star players play special teams,\u201d said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/shaun-dion-hamilton-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shaun Dion Hamilton<\/a>, Alabama\u2019s starting middle linebacker. \u201cThose were pretty game-changing on Saturday. It\u2019s important that we take special teams just as seriously as offense and defense.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hamilton, a projected All-American himself, also plays on the kickoff return. Standout receiver <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/calvin-ridley-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Calvin Ridley<\/a><\/strong> joins him, along with duties on the punt return team. Ridley exemplifies Saban&#8217;s limit on how many Special Team units he allows his starters to play on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"mainImage aligncenter\" title=\"View source image\" src=\"https:\/\/tse4.mm.bing.net\/th?id=OIP.-Y97M6L9mxwBb5T3US_kFgEsCy&amp;pid=15.1\" alt=\"Image result for calvin ridley\" width=\"376\" height=\"223\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe try not to play any starter on more than two special teams,\u201d Saban said. \u201cOur guys have realized the importance of playing special teams and they know how it can impact a game.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong>Against Florida State<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Tide&#8217;s \u00a0three special teams plays against Florida State directly produced 10 Crimson Tide points and prevented three for the Seminoles. This would seem like a fluke, if it didn&#8217;t happen game after game&#8211; including last week against Fresno State.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Fresno State vs Alabama 2017 Highlights\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QjHE6WIIAp4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s what separates Alabama from everyone else.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it\u2019s having players of that caliber approach playing in all three facets of the game with the right attitude that has led to the success the nation\u2019s No. 1 team seen on the field under Saban.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCoach Saban always talks about how everybody has a role &#8212; offensive, defense, special teams, and sometimes it might even be both,\u201d Harris said. \u201cSo guys are just willing to do anything, sell out, do anything to make a play, whether it\u2019s offensively, defensively, special teams. I just think that we have those kind of guys with that kind of mindset that\u2019s willing to do anything to help the team win.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Special Teams are truly special at Alabama. You can tell because the special players play on the punt return, kickoff coverage, and all of the other special teams.
