This will be the first meeting in the capital city between these longtime Southwest Conference rivals since the 2008 season. In addition, this is the first conference game at Texas since the 1990 season, when both were members of the SWC at the time. The eyes of Texas will all be on Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, starting at 230 pm on ABC. We at Last Word will provide three keys to Arkansas’s success against Texas.

Three Keys To Success For Arkansas Against Texas

Start Red Hot

The key to Arkansas’s success against Texas is to start hot offensively. If the Hogs can do this, they can neutralize much of the Longhorns’ success. In recent weeks, Arkansas has done this, to a certain degree. The loss to LSU, Arkansas leaped out to a 14-0 lead on the Tigers. In the two games prior, against Mississippi State and Auburn, Arkansas scored multiple points in the second quarter.

When scoring first this season, Arkansas is 2-5 and riding a five-game losing skid. Additionally, the Razorbacks are 0-3 under interim Bobby Petrino this season. For Texas, this stat is quite the opposite. Since the 2023 season, Texas is 23-2 when scoring first, the sixth-best record among P4 teams in that span. This also doubles the best active mark by an SEC program. To go even further, Texas holds the seventh-best first-quarter point differential, of +130, since the 2024 season. This is why the first key to success for Arkansas holds more value than some may understand.

Win The Battles

The second key to Arkansas’s success against Texas is to win the battles within the game. The first of two battles is the time of possession. This can be a huge factor on Saturday, as the Longhorns have won 19 straight games when they have had the ball more than their opponent. Yes, this may sound elementary, but this stat is one of the most telling of any in the box score. Since 2020, Texas is 32-2 when winning the time of possession battle. This ranks second to Georgia, which has a 50-2 record. For reference, each team is fairly even in this category, with Arkansas averaging 28:47 per possession. Meanwhile, Texas averages 29:01.

The second battle that must be won is the turnover battle. Yes, we are still discussing this issue that went to the shop months ago. While there, the issue seems to spread, as this has been the Achilles heel for Arkansas under Petrino. To compound this issue, Texas has forced a turnover in 21-straight home games. This is the longest active streak in the FBS. In this stretch, the Longhorns have converted into 158 points. We have discussed this recurring issue as almost a nuisance, and rightfully so. The Razorbacks have committed 41 turnovers since Petrino was hired as offensive coordinator, the most in all of college football. From 2020 to 2023, Arkansas only had 60 total turnovers. What is even more daunting is that in the last six seasons, Arkansas has played 30 games that have been decided by one score. This is why the second key to success is a battle that needs to be won badly.

It’s Been A While

The Razorbacks have a chance to ruin a return on Saturday. The final key to success for Arkansas is to play care-free. This has been a key to success over this season, and with the lack of success, Arkansas needs this against Texas. The Longhorns have not played at home in some time. Specifically, by the time the game kicks off, Texas would have played one home game, against Vanderbilt on November 1st, which will span over 63 days. We have all heard “The eyes of Texas are upon you,” and they really are. According to Nielsen, Texas is the fourth most-watched team in college football. The Longhorns average 6.48 million viewers per game this season.

Arkansas has a great opportunity to ruin a game and a season. A loss for Texas would take them out of the conversation for the College Football Playoff and bring a once hyped season to a sad ending. To do this, Arkansas will have to hit on all cylinders at every level of play. In addition, the coaches have to put their team in the best possible position to succeed. The final key to success is to ruin the day. If Arkansas does this, the bleeding will stop, finally.

Will the losing ever stop?

In closing, this game does not look good for Arkansas. The last time an Arkansas team with a losing record defeated the Longhorns was in 1938. We all remember that battle, right? Point being, a win by Arkansas would be a shock to the nation and conference. Also, it may give fans a reason to “Smile!”, as this season has been a motorcycle crash all over again. After all, Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek has not done the optics of this program any favors.

Opponent: Texas
Date and Time: Saturday, Nov. 22nd | 2:30 p.m. CST
Location: Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium
Television: ABC

Main Photo: Nelson Chenault-Imagn Images

As Arkansas winds down the 2025 season, a road trip to Austin, Texas, is next on the slate of games.
