Penn State needed to move on from James Franklin. That can be true. It is also possible that Virginia Tech has made its best hire since Frank Beamer. Terms of Franklin’s new contract in Blacksburg are not yet available. The Hokies are betting on a coach who dragged Penn State out of sanctions and into national relevance again. He was just never able to solve his big game problem.

A New Chapter in Blacksburg

Franklin’s Penn State Revival

Franklin took over a program still digging out from harsh NCAA penalties. Scholarships were reduced. Depth was thin. The brand suffered real damage. He stabilized the roster, reshaped the culture, and stacked winning seasons. Franklin delivered a Big Ten title, multiple New Year’s Six bowls, and regular top ten rankings. For a program that once looked broken, that matters.

His most glaring flaw remained for over a decade. Franklin piled up wins against the middle of the league but struggled against elite opponents. The record against Ohio State and other playoff contenders fell short of expectations. For a school that views itself as a national power, that was hard to ignore. In the end, both sides needed a reset.

Rebuilding From the Bottom

Context should not get lost. Franklin did not inherit a smooth machine at Penn State. He inherited a mess and turned it into a national factor again, modernized strength and conditioning, and invested in staff. He lived on the road and won recruiting battles.

Stars followed. Saquon Barkley chose Penn State. Micah Parsons did too. Many others bought into the vision because Franklin and his staff kept selling it every day. He also brought energy back to Beaver Stadium. The White Out felt massive again, not nostalgic. For a decade, Penn State felt like itself again. Franklin helped deliver that.

Photo Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images

Why the DMV Matters for Virginia Tech

One of Franklin’s best traits has always been his work in the mid-Atlantic. He built a strong recruiting pipeline through the DMV that powered Penn State’s rise. High school coaches across Maryland, Virginia, and the Washington area bought into his message and trusted his staff. Blue-chip recruits from that region helped anchor multiple top-tier classes. The DMV pipeline became a cornerstone of Penn State’s success under Franklin.

That skill set should translate cleanly to Blacksburg. Virginia Tech has always needed to win in that same footprint. Beamer built his best teams with players from Virginia and nearby states who played with an edge. If Franklin can reopen that pipeline for the Hokies, the roster can climb fast again.

Chasing the Beamer Standard

Beamer turned Virginia Tech into a national name. His Hokies grew from a regional factor to a true contender. The peak came with the 1999 team that played for the 2000 national championship. That group had Michael Vick at quarterback. Corey Moore and John Engelberger wrecked offenses up front. Anthony Midget locked things down in the secondary. Andre Davis stretched the field. Shyrone Stith powered the run game. Bob Slowikowski and Browning Wynn were throwback tight ends, gritty blockers who thrived in the trenches. Both were run-blocking technicians who set the physical tone inside and gave Virginia Tech its edge. In today’s game, Slowikowski would be a serious weapon as a receiver, but that era rarely asked tight ends to stretch the field.

Beamer’s rosters were loaded with that kind of toughness — and with NFL talent. From 1998 until his retirement, Beamer produced more than 60 NFL draft picks, a testament to the depth and discipline of those Hokie teams. That season still defines the standard in Blacksburg. Tough defense. Explosive plays. Special teams that changed games. Since Beamer retired, Virginia Tech has pursued that level but never caught up to it. The energy faded. Recruiting slipped. The program drifted toward the middle of the pack.

Why Franklin Fits What Virginia Tech Needs

Franklin’s job is now simple on paper but brutal in practice. He needs to make Virginia Tech matter again. Reestablish toughness at the line of scrimmage. Lockdown in state recruiting. Turn Lane Stadium back into a place opponents dread. Franklin is familiar with this blueprint from top to bottom. At Penn State, he walked into chaos and left behind a program that expects double-digit wins. The path at Virginia Tech will look different, but the core job stays the same. Restore belief. Land talent. Keep the Hokies in the national conversation.

This is not a sure thing. Franklin will still need to prove he can win enough big games. That has always been the question. If you want to revive a proud brand that lost its way, this hire makes sense. Franklin has already rebuilt one giant. For Penn State, it was time to move on. For Virginia Tech, this might be exactly the right time.

Main Photo: Matthew O’Haren-Imagn Images

Sources have confirmed earlier Pete Thamel reports.
