Surprisingly, the Big Ten had the second-most teams, with seven represented. The AP Poll, meanwhile, only had six among its top 25. With the conference owning the top two spots, the Big Ten looks poised to have some heavy-hitters contending for it all. Behind them, the Big Ten College Football Playoff picture gets interesting. It’s especially so when you see five SEC teams in the current 12-team field with two just on the doorstep.

Week 11 Big Ten College Football Playoff Picture

Heading into Week 11, the Big Ten has three teams in the field. Led by the Heisman Trophy favorite as well as a laundry list of semifinalists for other individual awards, the Buckeyes haven’t even begun to show that they’re capable of. Ryan Day’s offense has been methodical, averaging among the fewest plays per game. On defense, Ohio State has only managed to get better after losing a defensive coordinator and eight NFL Draft picks.

Ahead, Ohio State faces Purdue, UCLA, Rutgers, and Michigan. Three of those four games look like gimmes on paper. Then, there’s Michigan. Day hasn’t beaten Michigan since 2019. The Buckeyes’ Lunatic Fringe nearly drove him out of town after last year’s loss to the Wolverines, but has he learned his lesson? Time will tell.

Ohio State can make the CFP with two losses, but winning out with a Big Ten title would take all of the guesswork out.

This week: at Purdue (2-7, 0-6)

#2 Indiana

Current odds: >99%

Along with Ohio State, Indiana’s route looks smooth. Already with nine wins, the Hoosiers really only need one more win to get into at-large contention at the very least. Of course, for a program without the caché of a blueblood, Indiana needs to keep winning and doing so with style.

This week, Indiana gets to travel to Penn State. While this matchup was expected to be a top-10 affair, the Nittany Lions are still in a free fall. Curt Cignetti’s teams play best with a chip on their shoulder. Indiana knows the narratives. It knows the number two next to its name carries weight. With Ohio State beating Penn State 34-14 last week, Cignetti will try to one-up Day.

Indiana can’t clinch a spot in Indianapolis with a win, but it will get that much closer. After traveling to Penn State, the Hoosiers host a bad Wisconsin team before a bye. Then, a trip to Purdue closes out the year. Indiana is for real. Imagine the chaos if the Hoosiers win the Big Ten over Ohio State and/or take down a big, bad SEC team in the CFP.

This week: at Penn State (3-5, 0-5)

Good Bets For the College Football Playoffs

#9 Oregon

Current odds: 79%

Embed from Getty Images

Now, we get into the fun part. Oregon sits at ninth in the initial CFP rankings, but it hasn’t really beaten anyone yet. In the lone test, the Ducks fell at home to Indiana. Northwestern is the best team Oregon has beaten to this point, for reference.

Oregon is talented and well-coached, but we just don’t know how good this team is. These next few games will show us. This week, the Ducks travel to Iowa in a ranked matchup. Next week, it’s Minnesota, which is just outside the top 25 itself. After that, the Ducks end the season with back-to-back Pac-12 legacy rivalry games vs. USC and at Washington. Both the Trojans and Huskies have slim CFP hopes. Upsetting Oregon would go quite a way to impress the committee.

Winning out is the easiest path for Oregon. Ideally, Oregon needs to win three of four. If it beats Iowa and Minnesota, but loses to USC and Washington, it will not have the respect as a three-loss team.

This week: at #20 Iowa (6-2, 4-1)

#21 Michigan

Current odds: 72%

Michigan has been bobbing up and down in the “are they for real” and “they’re washed” conversations. Led by another top-tier defense, the Wolverines have clawed their way back into the picture. There is no good time for an injury, but if there were, it would be now. Superstar running back Justice Haynes has been knocked out for an extended period of time due to an injury, but Jordan Marshall has shown he can step up in relief.

Michigan’s path is clear: win out and you’re in. After the bye, Michigan gets to face Northwestern and Maryland. However, the Wolverines are in the same boat as Oregon in the sense that they haven’t beaten many good teams. They shut down Washington in a convincing 24-7 win, but other than that, who is the best team in the win column?

It’s very likely Michigan is going to head into that final week at home against Ohio State with the knowledge that a win punches its ticket.

This week: Idle

#19 USC

Current odds: 70%

What is USC? On one hand, the Trojans beat up on Michigan. On the other hand, they fell to Illinois the week after the Illini were trounced, 62-10. One way or another, USC’s path to the CFP has been set. As with the others, the Trojans need to win out.

This week, Northwestern comes to the Coliseum. Next week, it’s Iowa’s turn. Then, a trip to Oregon with an opportunity to make a statement before the classic UCLA matchup. A loss to Oregon might not completely eliminate USC, but it would need to pray for chaos.

This week: vs Northwestern (5-3, 3-2)

College Playoff Long Shots

Illinois

Current odds: 49%

Embed from Getty Images

Illinois entered this year as a popular pick to be the fourth Big Ten team to make it. Now, its hopes are on life support. With three losses – three bad losses, even – the Illini have no choice but to win out. After this week’s bye, Illinois gets Maryland, Wisconsin, and Northwestern.

Winning out doesn’t guarantee anything. That win over USC will only be impressive if the Trojans win out as well. The issue will be those ugly losses. Combined, Illinois lost to Indiana, Ohio State, and Washington by a score of 139 to 51.

This week: Idle

#20 Iowa

Current odds: 31%

The lone Big Ten team ranked by the College Football Playoff committee that wasn’t in the AP Poll, Iowa, has been odd this year. Led by another strong defensive unit, the Hawkeyes have won three in a row. Losses to Iowa State and Indiana are not the end of the world, but how long can Iowa get by without a real offense?

If Iowa can upset Oregon, we can have some serious conversations. After the Ducks, Iowa faces USC before ending the year with Michigan State and Nebraska. Iowa is not getting in with three losses. The Hawkeyes will have to win each of their final four matchups to qualify. They’re not technically eliminated with a loss to Oregon, but it would be about as close as possible.

This week: vs #9 Oregon (7-1, 4-1)

#23 Washington

Current odds: 18%

Washington has two losses this year. Its dynamic offense was stifled in both games against Ohio State and Michigan, so that will be part of the conversation against the Huskies getting in. However, with games against Wisconsin, Purdue, UCLA, and Oregon left, it could get interesting. While the odds sit at a meager 18%, could a three-loss Washington team make it? It’s unlikely, especially if that third loss is in the final week. Recency bias is a helluva drug. However, if Washington wins out, it could sneak in.

This week: at Wisconsin (2-6, 0-5)

Still Technically Alive

Northwestern

Current odds: <1%

Northwestern is technically alive, somehow. While the Wildcats don’t have any good wins, they could if they win out. USC and Michigan will be tough outs, of course. If it can get through those two, the season ends with Minnesota and Illinois. Winning out may not be enough to get in, but it may make things interesting.

This week: at #19 USC (6-2, 4-1)

Already Eliminated

Minnesota

UCLA

Nebraska

Maryland

Rutgers

Penn State

Wisconsin

Michigan State

Purdue

Main Image: Tommy Gilligan-Imagn Images

The Big Ten College Football Playoff picture is clear heading into Week 11.
