In fact, with Arkansas, Florida, and LSU already firing their coaches, the two whose seats are now the hottest meet Saturday night down on the plains at 7:30 on the SEC Network. Both Mark Stoops and Hugh Freeze need wins, and quickly, or they could be next to join the SEC Fired Coaches Club. The Wildcats are trying to break a long losing streak, while the Tigers want to build momentum. Let’s look at both teams, give you some history, and make a prediction as Kentucky Hits The Road Needing A Win.

Making Great Strides

Lost in the whole “will Stoops be fired or even make it to the end of the year” debate is the fact that Cutter Boley is doing some really good things at quarterback. After throwing for 258 yards and running for a score against Texas, the redshirt freshman was even better against Tennessee.

Yes, the Cats lost big. However, the young signal caller played well. Against a Volunteer defense that’s given up plenty of yards and points, Boley threw for 330 yards and five touchdowns. In addition, his quarterback rating was an astounding 195.

He became the first Wildcat signal caller to hit that mark since Andre Woodson did it versus Tennessee in 2007. No matter what happens the rest of the year, keeping him in Lexington is priority one for 2026.

Over the last few games, Kentucky’s become more of a pass-oriented team rather than run first like many of Stoops’ teams. Leading rusher Seth McGowan didn’t play against UT due to a shoulder injury suffered the week before. However, McGowan is listed as probable for Saturday night. Dante Dowdell and Jason Patterson got 103 yards between them in his absence. However, they face a tough test on Saturday night.

Let’s now turn to the Wildcats’ opponent as Kentucky hits the road needing a win.

Scouting The Tigers

Heading into 2025, big things were expected of Auburn. However, things haven’t worked out quite the way Tigers fans hoped. As a result, Freeze sits squarely on the hot seat. In some ways, they mirror Kentucky as they’ve had trouble getting yards and scoring points.

Oklahoma transfer Jackson Arnold hasn’t quite been the guy throwing for 1,263 yards and six touchdowns with two picks. In the come-from-behind win over Arkansas, Freeze sat Arnold in favor of Stanford transfer Ashton Daniels.

While the Tigers won 33-24, Daniels didn’t lead them to a touchdown. In fact, Auburn hasn’t scored more than two touchdowns in an SEC game all year. That’s something Kentucky hadn’t done until last week. As of this writing, the Tigers have yet to announce a starting quarterback for this week.

While the passing game has had issues, the running attack is strong. Jeremiah Cobb is second in the league with 717 yards. Against the Razorbacks, he went for 153. Look for Cobb to get the ball early and often.

On the other side of the ball, Auburn’s run defense is one of the best in the country. In fact, they rank fifth in college football, giving up only 84.1 yards per game. Furthermore, their 2.49 yards per rush is third in the nation. However, against the pass, it’s a different story. The Tigers’ defense is 91st in the country, giving up 234 yards a game. As we mentioned earlier, for Kentucky to get the win, Boley needs a big day.

Now that we’ve looked at both teams, let’s look at the one-sided rivalry as Kentucky hits the road needing a win.

Series History

Saturday marks the 36th time the Tigers and Wildcats have met on the gridiron. Auburn dominates the series at 28 wins to six, with one tie coming back in 1955. Currently, Auburn is on a four-game winning streak and has won 19 of the last 21.

Kentucky’s last win came in Auburn back in 2009. Derrick Locke rushed for 126 yards while Randall Cobb added 109 and the winning touchdown as UK won 21-14. It marked the first win over the Tigers since 1966.

As we do every week it’s prediction time as Kentucky hits the road needing a win.

Who Wins On Saturday?

Much has been made about the current Kentucky losing streak. The Wildcats have lost 10 straight since beating Ole Miss over a year ago. Many believe Stoops needs wins to get himself off the hot seat. The same can be said about Auburn, though the win last week may have helped Freeze for now.

For the Cats to win, they’re most likely going to have to do it through the air. If Boley has similar numbers to last week, they’ve got a chance. In the end, look for the Tigers to do just enough as Freeze gets another win and Stoops’ seat gets hotter.

Auburn 24-20

Main Image: Jeff Blake-Imagn Images

“SEC Coaching Hot Seat Bowl” On Saturday It’s no stretch to say the game between Kentucky and Auburn is potentially a big one, just not the normal way you’d expect.
