{"id":81277,"date":"2025-10-17T12:00:03","date_gmt":"2025-10-17T16:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/?p=81277"},"modified":"2025-10-17T10:38:01","modified_gmt":"2025-10-17T14:38:01","slug":"auburn-dl-to-face-off-in-premiere-position-battle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2025\/10\/17\/auburn-dl-to-face-off-in-premiere-position-battle\/","title":{"rendered":"Auburn DL to Face Off in Premiere Position Battle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Auburn\u2019s defensive line cemented itself as one of the nation\u2019s elite against Georgia last week, but it\u2019s yet to face a challenge like the Missouri backfield.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the controversial 20-10 loss to Georgia on Oct. 11, Auburn\u2019s defense held them to just 79 rushing yards, by far the Bulldogs&#8217; lowest total of the season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Auburn, it dropped its defense\u2019s per-game total to just 86.5 rush yards allowed per contest, the 11th best in the country.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What the Line Is Facing<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tiger defensive coordinator D. J. Durkin has this line, led by edge rushers <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/keldric-faulk-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Keldric Faulk<\/a> and <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/keyron-crawford-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Keyron Crawford<\/a>, firing on all cylinders just in time for their biggest test of the season in the Missouri rushing attack led by running back <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/ahmad-hardy-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ahmad Hardy.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hardy, a sophomore transfer who racked up over 1300 yards at Louisiana-Monroe as a freshman, has been one of the most impactful transfers in the country this season. Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz\u2019s 16th-ranked Tigers were projected to take a step back this season offensively after they lost a bulk of their offensive firepower to the NFL in the offseason.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Hardy&#8217;s Year<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The step up in competition for Hardy from the Sun Belt to the SEC hasn\u2019t slowed him down at all. In fact, he\u2019s putting himself firmly in the conversation of being the best running back in the country.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite a disappointing performance relative to the rest of his season in Missouri\u2019s loss to Alabama last weekend, where he ran for only 52 yards on 12 attempts, Hardy sits at number two in the FBS in both rushing yards (782) and rushing touchdowns (9) through five games.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He\u2019s shown a rare combination of speed and physicality, with an ability to run both in-and-outside the tackles. With quick feet, he usually makes the first man miss and has the strength to break the second man\u2019s tackle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Freeze<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At his weekly press conference, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2025\/10\/17\/week-8-sec-betting-lines-3rd-satuday-in-october\/\" target=\"_self\">Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze<\/a> was asked by reporters if they felt the need to be more physical than usual this weekend.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201dHe\u2019s big, strong, a really good running back. One of the better we\u2019ve faced. (Physicality) definitely will be an emphasis. We put an emphasis each week on stopping the run, this is no different, but he is one of the better we\u2019ve faced,\u201d Freeze said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not just Hardy they need to worry about, either.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His backup, <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jamal-roberts-2.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jamal Roberts<\/a>, averages 7.3 yards a pop (400 yards on 53 carries), even better than Hardy\u2019s 6.8.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Running the Offense<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Penn State transfer quarterback <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/beau-pribula-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Beau Pribula<\/a> has fully settled into running the offense this season. In addition to being one of the better passers in the SEC, he can hurt defenses with his legs, too, should a lane open up or the pocket break down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With some additional yards coming on swing passes and other contributors, Missouri\u2019s offense is currently producing 270.5 rushing yards a game, ranking them just one spot outside the top five nationally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Durkin has his work cut out for him, namely in sealing the edges, where Hardy is at his best and where Pribula will take off when the pocket breaks down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Auburn&#8217;s Run Defense<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Auburn has plenty of capable run defenders, with defensive lineman Keldrick Faulk and <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/malik-blocton-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Malik Blocton<\/a>, and linebacker <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/xavier-atkins-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Xavier Atkins<\/a> all popping on tape against Georgia.
