The Texas Longhorns make their first-ever trip to Lexington to face Kentucky. Mark Stoops’ club would like nothing more than to spring an upset that hopefully jump-starts the rest of the season. In order to do that, the Cats will have to overcome a couple of negative streaks. Let’s take a look at both teams, give you the abbreviated series history, and give you a prediction as Kentucky prepares for Texas.

Taking Steps Forward

Ever since he was given the reins of the offense, Cutter Boley has played pretty well. In fact, he had his best game of the year in the loss to Georgia. The freshman completed 25 of 41 passes for 225 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. This is coming on the road against a top 30 defense. Boley’s continued improvement has been a bright spot in 2025.

Another positive for the Cats has been the running of Seth McGowan. Currently, he ranks fourth in the SEC, averaging 86 yards a game. Furthermore, his seven touchdowns put him third in the league. Taking it a step further, McGowan has scored exactly half of the Wildcats’ touchdowns this season.

While the staff says the offense is improving each week, they’ll certainly need it on Saturday as they face one of the nation’s best defenses. Let’s look at the Wildcats’ opponent as Kentucky prepares for Texas.

Scouting The Longhorns

It’s safe to say 2025 hasn’t quite gone the way the Texas faithful thought. Considered a preseason lock College Football Playoff squad by many, including Last Word, who had the Longhorns in the championship game.

Steve Sarkisian’s squad comes into Saturday night sporting a 4-2 record. Granted, there are a lot of schools that would love to be 4-2 and considered struggling, Kentucky included. However, they are coming off their best win of the year, dominating the “Red River Rivalry” 23-6 over previously unbeaten Oklahoma.

The offense is led by quarterback Arch Manning, who hasn’t lived up to the ridiculous preseason hype. Manning has thrown for 1,319 yards and 12 touchdowns to go with five interceptions. In addition, he leads the team in rushing with 194 yards and five touchdowns. He had one of his best games of the year against the Sooners, completing 21 of 27 passes for 166 yards and a score.

When Manning throws it, Ryan Wingo is his top target. The sophomore leads the Longhorns with 22 catches and four touchdowns and is second with 298 yards. Redshirt freshman Parker Livingstone leads the team with 305 yards and is averaging a whopping 20.5 yards per catch.

Texas hasn’t been that successful in running the ball. However, a large part of that was due to Tre Wisner being injured. The junior has only played in three games, rushing for 185 yards. He returned for the Oklahoma game and looked like his old self, running for 94.

On the other side of the ball, the Longhorn defense is really good. Through six games, they rank 11th in college football, allowing 211 yards per game. Against the run, they are even better, sitting fourth in the country, giving up 75 yards. It will be tough sledding indeed for a Wildcat team that wants to run the ball.

Now that we’ve looked at both teams, let’s go through the years as Kentucky prepares for Texas.

Series History

There aren’t a lot of games between the two schools, as Saturday marks only the third time the teams have played. As we mentioned earlier, it’s the first trip ever to Lexington for the Longhorns.

The initial meeting took place in 1951 in Austin. In a story familiar to UK fans, the inability to protect the quarterback and special teams miscues led to a defeat. A sack of Kentucky star signal caller Babe Parilli and a subsequent fumble led to Texas’s only score.

Kentucky got on the board in the third quarter; however, the Cats couldn’t get the snap down, resulting in a mixed extra point. Despite out-gaining Texas 287-221 and having 21 first downs to eight, the Cats lost 7-6.

Last season, the Wildcats returned to Austin, falling 31-14. In that game, Boley played most of the second half, throwing for 160 yards and an interception. Quinn Ewers completed 20 of 31 passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns. Texas outrushed Kentucky 251 to 21 and had 442 yards to Kentucky’s 232. Wisner had 156 yards and a touchdown.

It’s prediction time as Kentucky prepares for Texas.

Who Wins On Saturday?

Following back-to-back playoff appearances, the Longhorns have to win out just to even have a chance at making the top 12 again. However, the Cats could be catching Texas at a good time as they are playing a third straight road game and coming off that big win over the Sooners. Could a letdown be possible?

As for the Cats, they’ll try to reverse the “bye week blues.” During Stoops’ time in Lexington, he is 6-11 coming off a bye week and has lost five straight to SEC opponents. Since 2023 UK is 0-5 in night games at Kroger Field. This after going 15-6 from 2016-2022.

One last thing, Kentucky’s trying to break a long SEC losing streak. It’s been over a year since UK won at Ole Miss. Since that time, they’ve lost eight straight. Unfortunately for the Big Blue Nation, those streaks continue on Saturday.

Texas 35-14

Main Image: Matt Stone/Courier Journal / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

Cats Look To Break SEC Losing Streak It will be a night of firsts on Saturday under the lights at 7:00 pm on ESPN at Kroger Field.
