More specifically, Clemson football, as the Palmetto Tigers take on the Bayou Tigers of LSU this Saturday night. It is one of the most anticipated matchups of a stacked week one slate. Both teams enter this game with big expectations for the 2025 season, making this an important opening game.

While the result of this matchup won’t necessarily make or break the season this soon for either team, it will tell where these teams truly stand to begin this season. Getting off to a great start with a win against one of the top programs in the country would prove the offseason hype is legit. A win also gives the fans much to be excited about this season.

Clemson vs. LSU

The Matchup

Clemson will play LSU at home Saturday night with a kickoff time of 7:30 pm. These top 10 teams will face off in the ESPN primetime game for week one on Saturday. It will also be one of the best quarterback battles of the season with two Heisman contenders taking snaps.

Clemson’s Cade Klubnik is considered by many to be the best quarterback in college football entering this season. This comes as a result of him throwing for over 3,600 yards and 36 touchdowns in 2024. Of the people who don’t see Klubnik as the top quarterback in the FBS going into the 2025 season, a majority of them believe it is because LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier is better.

The Bayou Tigers senior quarterback had a similarly impressive 2024 season. He threw for 4,052 yards and 29 touchdowns as a junior. The performance of each of these quarterbacks will be a determining factor in whose team comes out of this game with the victory.

Early Postseason Implications

As mentioned, both teams are ranked in the preseason top 10. Clemson is ranked fourth and LSU is ranked ninth in the country entering week one. If both teams were to hold these rankings at the end of the season, it would put each of them in the college football playoffs.

While a loss for either team may knock them down a couple spots, as long as the game stays tight, it won’t knock them out of playoff contention. A win for either program, though, will put them firmly in the top three going into week two. Winning this game also is huge for the victor’s resume late in the season.

This game holds implications not just for the playoffs, but the Heisman trophy race as well. Klubnik and Nussmeier are widely considered two of the top three candidates for the Heisman going into this season. Performing at a high level with the competition on the opposite sideline is one of the best ways to open a Heisman campaign. The winner of the game will give themselves an edge in the eyes of the voters for the award.

Keys to a Clemson Victory

There are two main keys that will have the biggest impact on whether the Palmetto Tigers win this primetime home opener. They are the two main sources of the hype surrounding Clemson coming into the 2025 season. Klubnik and the defensive line’s performances will be the determining factors for Dabo Swinney’s team in week one.

LSU’s offensive line had to undergo a total revamp after losing four of its five starters from last season. While the Bayou Tigers may have reloaded with some good talent, they are largely inexperienced especially playing together. That is opposite the Palmetto Tigers’ veteran defensive line. On Clemson’s defensive front, three of the four starters have played in the program together the last three years. That defensive front will have a chance to show its talents against an offensive line that is still trying to put it together.

Offensively, Klubnik has to be ready to use both his arm and legs to make plays. LSU’s defensive backfield has lots of talent. In order to keep them honest, Klubnik has to make the Bayou Tigers’ defense fear his running ability just as much as his passing. That is something Klubnik can do.

That will help to open some things up for the talented Clemson wide receivers. From there it is all about spreading the wealth to his different weapons. Klubnik’s ability to control this game, especially as the emotions are rising, will be huge to Clemson getting the win this weekend.

Main Image: Ken Ruinard / staff / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

The time has finally come for some college football!
