Now, a month away from the season opener, excitement is starting to grow. A pivotal season in Gainesville, the team is hoping to pick up where it left off. Struggling with more minor injuries, fans will be monitoring the status of quarterback DJ Lagway. However, no signs point toward him missing any part of the season. Head coach Billy Napier has his team ready to compete. Repeating the phrase “Spot the Ball”, it is clear that the Gators are not scared of their tough schedule. Expectations are high, and anything under eight wins could spell doom for this coaching staff. Each week will be a battle, and the Gators cannot afford to overlook any opponent. Without further ado, let’s take a look at the Florida Gators’ 2025 schedule.

Pivotal Four Game Stretch

FCS Opener

The Gators open their season at home against Long Island University. An FCS team, the Sharks finished last season with a record of 4-8. Competing in the Northeast Conference, they have a tall task in week one. The Sharks are led by redshirt junior Ethan Greenwood at quarterback. A talented player, he earned second-team All-NEC honors and led all quarterbacks with 913 rushing yards. Although this should be an easy victory, the Gators must take control of this game early. The Sharks have enough talent to keep this game relatively close if the Gators do not take them seriously. However, there is a clear talent gap, and college football fans would be shocked if this were not a complete blowout. This early action should give Florida the chance to explore its depth chart. Look for a variety of players to earn some snaps and compete for more playing time.

Trap Game?

The second week of the season, the Gators will be hosting the South Florida Bulls. Last playing each other in 2022, the Bulls gave Florida quite the scare. Pulling out a victory by the smallest of margins, Florida was lucky to escape with a 31-28 win. Now, this was three years ago, but it shows what happens when you underestimate an opponent. This year, the Bulls are no pushover and are viewed by many as a contender in the American Conference. Led by quarterback Byrum Brown, this is a potent offense that can score with anyone. The Bulls will enter this matchup fresh off a huge test against Boise State. With Florida’s first opponent being an FCS squad, they will still be testing the waters. It is imperative that the Gators do not allow this to be a tough game.

Clash of the Giants

The first big game of the season, the Gators will travel to Baton Rouge to take on the LSU Tigers. Led by projected first-rounder Garrett Nussmeier, this will be one of the best teams in the country. Viewed by many as a true national championship contender, the Gators will have their hands full. LSU will enter this matchup battle-tested, as they have a gigantic clash week one against the Clemson Tigers. Head coach Brian Kelly rivals Napier on the hot seat, as both coaches have a lot to prove. Using this game as a launching point last season, the Gators defeated a top-25 LSU team. Now, it will be LSU looking to hand the Gators some payback. This will be Florida’s first true challenge and will no doubt dictate the rest of their season.

Photo Credit: Kim Klement Neitzel-Imagn Images

Revenge Tour

The final game before their first bye week, the Gators will be looking to exact some revenge of their own. Florida was completely embarrassed on its home turf last season against the Miami Hurricanes. This year, Florida will be hoping for a much more positive start to the season. As for Miami, they will be replacing some high-end talent, especially at the quarterback position. After losing Cam Ward to the NFL, the Hurricanes sought his replacement in the transfer portal, landing on Carson Beck. The former Georgia signal caller decided to enter the portal after an up-and-down career in Athens. Now arriving at Miami, the hope is that he can elevate them into the college football playoffs. This will be an intriguing matchup and could put one program on the brink of playoff elimination. Two heated rivals, this should be a fun and physical affair.

Predictions

Starting with the week one matchup, the Gators should not have too much trouble. Although Long Island does have some talent, look for Florida to breeze by. Moving on to week two, the Gators could have a bit of trouble. A dark horse playoff contender, South Florida is no pushover. However, Florida should be able to pull away with relative ease in the second half. Week three is where the Gators get their first tough test of the season. The LSU Tigers have national title hopes this season, and a loss here would be extremely detrimental to their expectations. Unfortunately for Gators fans, I predict a close loss to the Tigers. Lastly, all eyes will be on the Florida v Miami clash. Coming off the loss, Florida should be highly motivated to make a statement. Despite the Hurricanes’ talent, I believe Florida will pull off a two-possession victory.

Record: 3-1

Main Photo: Matt Pendleton-Imagn Images

The Florida Gators began their Fall camp on Wednesday, July 30th.
