For Mark Stoops and the Kentucky Wildcats, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">it&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> a chance to <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">put a disappointing 4-8 campaign in the mirror. Over the next couple of weeks, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">we&#8217;re<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> going position by position, looking at the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">SEC&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> elder <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">statesman&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> 13th squad. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Up first<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is the glamour position <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> one <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">that&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> being <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">watched<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> closely by the Big Blue Nation.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> With that in mind, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">let&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> preview them with the 2025 Kentucky Fall Camp: Quarterbacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Looking At A Very Scrutinized Position<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A New Home<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Following the 2024 season starter<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/brock-vandagriff-1.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-02-01_cfb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, Brock Vandagriff<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0surprisingly retired from football. In addition,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/gavin-wimsatt-1.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-02-01_cfb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Gavin Wimsatt <\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">transferred to Jacksonville State. As a result, Stoops and offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan looked for an experienced signal caller. You <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">won\u2019t<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> find many more experienced than\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/zach-calzada-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Zach Calzada<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The well-traveled signal caller ranked\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/player\/zach-calzada-46051591\/college-326071\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">as the 26th-best quarterback\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">in the portal. Kentucky is his third stop in the SEC during\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2024\/12\/19\/zach-calzadas-next-college-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">his college career.<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Calzada originally signed with Texas A&amp;M way back in 2019. During the 2021 season, Calzada started 10 games. His biggest win came in a triumph over Alabama.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He transferred to Auburn in 2022. However, he had shoulder surgery and never played for the Tigers. The <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">next<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> year, he was on the move again, this time moving to FCS Incarnate Word. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">That\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the same school that produced\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/cameron-ward-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Cam Ward<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">2024 was a banner season for Calzada. Named Southland Conference Player Of The Year, he threw for 3,751 yards, 35 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. His yards and touchdowns ranked fifth and second, respectively, in FCS. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He&#8217;s <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">trending towards being the starter against Toledo in the season opener.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Continuing with 2025 Kentucky Fall Camp: Quarterbacks, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">let&#8217;s<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">look at<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the player battling Calzada for the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">QB 1<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> spot.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Quarterback Of The Future?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">At the end of last season, Stoops and Hamdan stated\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/cutter-boley-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Cutter Boley<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0was the starter heading into 2025. However, with the addition of Calzada, it looks like the hometown hero will be your number-two signal caller.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Appearing in four games, the Lexington Christian Academy star completed 26 of 49 passes for 338 yards and two touchdowns. However, he did have four interceptions. Putting it in perspective, Liam Coen was still the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Cats\u2019<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> offensive coordinator. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">That was before he left for Tampa Bay and later became the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jacksonville <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jaguars&#8217;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> head coach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Saunders played at Bishop McDevitt High School in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Rated as the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/Player\/stone-saunders-46117119\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">39th-best quarterback in the nation<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and 18th-best player in the Keystone State. He owns the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">state\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> all-time record for passing touchdowns with 204. Saunders was named Pennsylvania High School Player of the Year. Despite offers from a <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">who\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> who of college football, including Colorado, Georgia, Miami, Michigan, and Texas A&amp;M, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">he&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> remained committed to the Cats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The second of the incoming quarterbacks is\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/Player\/brennen-ward-46134106\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Brennen Ward.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hailing from Columbus, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ohio\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Gahanna Lincoln High School, Ward ranks as the 49th-best player in the Buckeye State and 64th-best quarterback in the nation. In 2024, he threw for 1,200 yards and 12 touchdowns but missed part of the year due to a knee injury. Even though Ward <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">didn\u2019t<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> play a full season, he was still named first-team all-league.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The final signal caller is a familiar one in\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/beau-allen-2.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Beau Allen.<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0A standout at Lexington Catholic High School, Allen spent his first two years at Kentucky backing up\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/will-levis-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Will Levis<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Playing at Tarelton State in 2022, Allen threw for 2,836 yards and 23 touchdowns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">next<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> year, he transferred to Georgia Southern. However, he never played for the Eagles after being forced to sit out due to being a two-time transfer. Since then, the NCAA has <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">gotten rid of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> that rule. The veteran sixth-year player lends experience to the quarterback room.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Final Thoughts<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">For the fourth time in five years, Kentucky opens the season with a transfer quarterback. First, it was Levis for two years, followed by\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/devin-leary-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Devin Leary<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and finally Vandagriff. Calzada <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">didn&#8217;t<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> come to Kentucky to sit on the bench. However, Hamdan has shown <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">he&#8217;ll<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> go to one of the backups if the starter is struggling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">All signs point to Calzada being under center when the season kicks off <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">on <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">August 31st<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.
