He led his high school (Millard South) to a state championship last season as a junior with a 12-1 record. Thomalla passed for 3,664 yards and 47 touchdowns with only three interceptions.

As a sophomore, he passed for 2,800 yards and 26 touchdowns. Following the 2024 season, Thomalla was named MaxPreps Nebraska Player of the Year as he guided Millard South to its first state championship in 15 seasons. With the combination of size and his arm strength, Thomalla already looks the part of a big-time college quarterback. He finished seventh this week in the Elite 11 rankings.

Alabama’s Quarterback Room

The current group of quarterbacks at Alabama is Ty Simpson, Austin Mack, and Keelon Russell. Simpson was a five-star recruit from Martin, Tennessee, when he committed to the Crimson Tide in 2021. He is the presumed starter for Alabama going into this season. While he lacks experience, offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb said Simpson would be the starter if the Crimson Tide were to play a game after the conclusion of spring practice.

Mack is in his second season in Tuscaloosa after transferring from Washington. He lacks experience as well, but is in his third year working in the DeBoer and Grubb offense. Russell is a freshman who has plenty of upside. When he signed with Alabama, he was listed as a five-star player by 247Sports. He was ranked as the top player out of Texas for the 2025 recruiting class. Thomalla will have some stiff competition when he arrives on campus in 2026.

More Alabama Recruiting

On June 9th, Alabama picked up another major commitment for the 2026 class. Four-star offensive tackle Sam Utu picked the Crimson Tide after having an official visit on June 6th. Utu is from Orange, California and is rated as the No. 7 inside offensive lineman. He is ranked 14th overall in California.

Alabama will have more potential playmakers on official visits this week. Wide receiver Cederian Morgan is a five-star recruit from Benjamin Russell in Alexander City, Alabama. Morgan is the top prospect in Alabama and is expected to announce his commitment on July 2nd. Running back Ezavier Crowell is also visiting Tuscaloosa. As a four-star prospect, he is also an in-state player. Crowell is from Jackson, Alabama, and helped lead his team to a state championship last season. Both Morgan and Crowell are being recruited by Auburn as well. It is an Iron Bowl recruiting competition between the two rivals.

Main Image: Syndication: Arizona Republic

The Crimson Tide got a huge pickup for their 2026 recruiting class this week as Alabama flips 2026 four-star quarterback Jett Thomalla.
