But after it ended, Dougherty led his quarterbacks, receivers, and running backs through some additional fundamental drills on the turf inside Husky Stadium. \u201cWe were just working on some footwork, bubble stuff with the receivers and running backs,\u201d Dougherty said. \u201cIt\u2019s Spring ball. Those are the things that we gotta do, work on technique, fundamentals.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Dougherty Discusses Washington&#8217;s Offense<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Husky Defense Creates Havoc<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fundamentals are key at this time of year, as the two sides of the ball are working to install their schematics and going against each other all month. On Thursday, the Washington defense had a quality outing against the offense during the team period scrimmages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2025\/01\/08\/deep-dive-into-ryan-walters-defense-for-washington\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Ryan Walters\u2019 defense<\/a> pulled down three interceptions on the day. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/leroy-bryant-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leroy Bryant<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jacob-lane-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jacob Lane<\/a> each recorded their first interceptions of the Spring. Bryant also had a fumble recovery after an issue on the exchange between the quarterback and the running back. Washington State transfer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/taariq-al-uqdah-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Buddah Al-Uqdah<\/a> caught his second interception of the Spring and also recorded a pass breakup. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/tacario-davis-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tacario Davis<\/a> and redshirt freshman Rahshawn Clark each recorded a pass deflection in the secondary. Safety Vincent Holmes had his hands on an interception, but dropped it as he fell backwards to the turf. And up front, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/bryce-butler-2.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bryce Butler<\/a> got his hand up in the air to break up a pass at the line of scrimmage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of guys dropping out into windows, a lot of coverage disguise, and things like that,\u201d Dougherty said of the Washington defense. When the quarterbacks make throwing mistakes or misread a coverage, Dougherty makes a point to find out the reason for the mistake rather than simply correcting it. \u201c\u2018What happened on this play?\u2019,\u201d he\u2019d ask his quarterbacks. \u201c\u2018What\u2019d you see?\u2019 I want to know what he saw, I want him to tell me.\u201d Dougherty said. From there, the coordinator and quarterback work to unpack the reasoning and move towards a correction. \u201cA lot of learning going on out there,\u201d Dougherty said. \u201cIt\u2019s our job to make sure that those guys are all getting those reps, because that\u2019s how you learn.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Receiver Standouts<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the quality plays weren\u2019t just limited to the defense on Thursday. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/rashid-williams-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rashid Williams<\/a> pulled down a sideline catch during the two-minute drill portion of practice in tight coverage. With the cornerback draped over him, Williams extended towards the far sideline, catching a dart of a throw from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/demond-williams-jr-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Demond Williams Jr.<\/a> as he rolled out of the pocket. Williams fell to the turf in front of the players along the defensive sideline, hopping up quickly to emphasize his catch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think Rashid\u2019s doing great, you can just tell,\u201d Dougherty said after practice. \u201cHe\u2019s just so much more comfortable this year, lining up, knowing what to do, and playing faster because of it.\u201d The coaching staff noted how Williams had added size this offseason, and he looks physically bigger on the field. With <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2025\/03\/31\/jedd-fisch-washington-coordinators-open-spring-practice\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Denzel Boston out for the majority of the Spring<\/a>, Williams has stepped into the leadership role as a redshirt sophomore.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRashid\u2019s been doing his thing,\u201d Demond Williams Jr. said after practice. \u201cHe\u2019s got that mindset about him, that attitude that he\u2019s going to go get it done. That\u2019s what I love about him.\u201d The two young players have connected several times this Spring during team periods, and it\u2019s going to help the wide receiver develop into a veteran role despite having just 13 career receptions. In addition to Williams, the true freshman receivers each pulled down some quality catches. Marcus Harris made a sliding grab on the sideline during the two-minute drill. In the same practice period, Raiden Vines-Bright and Chris Lawson each had a couple of hands catches.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Responsibilities as Offensive Coordinator<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA lot more things that come to me, decisions and things like that, that come across your desk as the coordinator,\u201d Dougherty explained after Washington&#8217;s practice. After being elevated from his former role of quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator, Dougherty detailed his change in responsibilities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPractice is pretty much the same,\u201d he said. \u201cIn terms of being out here, it\u2019s more overall messaging to the offense.\u201d Dougherty said that he now has more control over the way meetings are run, and how the coaching staff packages and presents different things to the offense.
