The Game did not need any more spice than it already had. However, after 60 minutes of football, the teams had to have more. As the Ohio State players were lined up in the South end of the stadium singing Carmen Ohio along with the band, some Michigan players were having some fun. In two instances, the Wolverines attempted to plant a flag into the synthetic turf which warranted a response by Ohio State, causing a fight.

As a result, the Big Ten released a statement in which it fined both teams $100,000 for the skirmish:

The Big Ten Conference has determined that the actions of both teams following the Michigan-Ohio State football game on Saturday, November 30, 2024, violated the Big Ten Sportsmanship Policy. Not only did the actions of both teams violate fundamental elements of sportsmanship such as respect and civility, the nature of the incident also jeopardized the safety of participants and bystanders.

As a result of these violations, the Big Ten Conference has issued an institutional fine to both the University of Michigan and The Ohio State University in the amount of $100,000 each.

The Big Ten Conference considers this matter concluded and will have no further comment.

Big Ten Levies Harsh Punishments for Ohio State, Michigan for Brawl

Perhaps the most surprising bit of the entire debacle is that no players were officially suspended by the conference for the postseason. This is good news for the Buckeyes as they will likely be preparing for a College Football Playoff appearance.

Ohio State released its statement in response to the Big Ten’s decision:

We respect the Big Ten Conference’s decision in this matter. What happened post-game yesterday was unfortunate. Good sportsmanship is always important in everything we do at Ohio State. Moving forward, we will continue to examine and address our post-game protocols to ensure our student-athletes, coaches, visiting teams and staff safely exit the field.

Another important part of the skirmish was the response of the police. Ohio State Police teamed up with the Columbus Police Department and Franklin County Sheriffs for security. However, in the middle of the melee, because the situation wasn’t chaotic enough, some Franklin County Sheriffs elected to employ pepper spray on anyone around them, regardless of whether they were aggressors or what colors the players or staffers were wearing.

The Ohio State police released a response after the game:

Following the game, officers from multiple law enforcement agencies assisted in breaking up an on-field altercation. During the scuffle, multiple officers representing Ohio and Michigan deployed pepper spray. OSUPD is the lead agency for games & will continue to investigate.

Needless to say, it was a bit of an overreaction by the officers. The response caused unnecessary bodily harm to players, coaches, and staffers.

As of this publishing, Michigan has not responded to the fine.

Photo courtesy: Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

Michigan won The Game, 13-10.
