Save the apple and pumpkin picking for Sunday. The Week 7 SEC slate is going to be a treat. We have three marquee matchups and potential big-time ratings this weekend in the Southeastern Conference. Hopefully, the teams learned that avoiding all of that yummy rat poison is probably best. Last week, #1 Alabama, #4 Tennessee, and #9 Missouri all fell on the road. While those losses may have been disappointing (embarrassing) for fan bases, they are not fatal. The SEC is still wide open, with Texas remaining as the only unbeaten team.

With divisions gone by the wayside, the SEC can select the two top teams and have them meet in Atlanta for the championship. One loss keeps you in the conversation. A second loss complicates matters, and a third loss leaves you wondering what might have been. The same holds for teams looking to gain an at-large spot in the college football playoff. An SEC team with two or fewer losses is likely a lock for an at-large spot. A three-loss team could argue but would almost definitely be looking at a road game instead of hosting a first-round matchup. Three games in this week’s Week 7 SEC slate will have the biggest impact on teams keeping their focus on a spot in Atlanta and in the CFB Playoff.

Deep Fried Rat Poison

Texas has seemingly had the Midas Touch in 2024. The Longhorns threw the biggest and best party when it officially joined the SEC on July 1. Steve Sarkisian has masterfully navigated injuries and has the Longhorns undefeated and multi-touchdown favorites this weekend at Red River. What makes the Horns’ run more impressive is how Sarkisian has had to rely on his depth.

Texas opened training camp, losing CJ Baxter and Christian Clark, the Longhorn’s top two running backs, to season-ending injuries. In addition, he has had to play each of his last couple of games with his backup quarterback, which his Heisman-favorite, Quinn Ewers, has recovered from injury. Arch Manning is no regular backup, but it has been impressive how he has lived up to the hype and continued to enable Texas to have a high-powered offense. Let’s hope the Longhorns were paying attention to the games last weekend.

Oklahoma looks to be in transition, and the move to the SEC has them probably asking quietly (publicly) if this is how Nebraska felt. The schedule will not do the Sooners any favors, but they confidently come into Dallas. The Sooners upset the Longhorns last year on a late-game drive after getting blown out the year before.

A loss by Texas keeps all of Texas’ goals in front of them for the season, but you have to consider the ego shot that would be. A loss by Oklahoma probably ends its hopes of an SEC Championship and sees them end with four of the six teams they play ranked in the Top 25.

Gator Bait

Tennessee looked mortal on Saturday night in Fayetteville. While the defense shined, Nico Iamaleava and the Vols’ offense never could get on track. The loss to Arkansas was unexpected but not fatal. The Vols host the Tide next week and will head to Athens in November to take on Georgia. Tennessee should be careful, though, not to look past the Gators. The Vols won a close game two years ago in Knoxville 38-33 against a scrappy Gators team. Last year, they went down to the swamp and lost.

Neither result should be what Josh Heupel of Vol fans should be expecting. A solid showing on Saturday night in Neyland will put the Arkansas loss behind them and allow them to focus on beating the Tide on the third Saturday in October. Another loss to the Gators will likely put an SEC Championship or College Football Playoff appearance on the wayside and may also bring heat on Heupel for more.

Louisiana Saturday Night

Get down the fiddle and get down the bow, kick off your shoes, and throw ’em on the floor. We have LSU and Ole Miss live from Tiger Stadium on Saturday night. The 7:30 p.m. ABC slot has replaced the 3:30 p.m. CBS slot as the conference’s marquee game each week. ABC and Disney are clearly smiling about their decision to go all in on their SEC investment. Ok, enough ratings. What about the game?

Ole Miss and LSU were one of the season’s most entertaining games last year unless you like to watch Iowa football or teams play defense. The 2023 game between Ole Miss and LSU resulted in 1,343 total yards and 104 points scored in a 55-49 Rebel win. Both teams come into the game one loss and strong offenses. A second loss by either team puts an at-large playoff spot in serious jeopardy. Another loss to a big-time SEC program for LSU’s Brian Kelly could have them on the hot seat. We don’t expect a high-scoring affair this year. Pete Goulding and the Transfer Portal have the Rebels playing high-end defense. This game, instead, will come down to the play of the two quarterbacks, Ole Miss’s Jaxson Dart and LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier. The quarterback that makes the fewest mistakes and the biggest plays will win on Saturday night in the Bayeaux.

Week 7 SEC Betting Lines

Alabama and Missouri look to bounce back in the Week 7 SEC noon slate, but why is Missouri on the road at UMass? You’re an SEC team no? And no longer in the Big 12. Georgia looks to avoid a trap game (and the Clarke County Police Department) in Athens.
