Despite having only one ranked versus ranked matchup on Saturday, we had plenty of action and excitement for Week 6. Saturday’s results also helped to shape and form our Week 6 Heisman poll. So pull up a chair, and let’s take a quick look at the biggest movers and players in college football.

Strike the Pose: Week 6 Heisman Poll

A new week and a new number one. Our Last Word on Sports writers believe the Heisman is more than just a quarterback award. We will continue to track whose stock is rising and whose stock is falling in our Week 6 Heisman poll. While we have no new candidates this week, we had considerable movement from everyone on our list. Before we get to the poll, we are just left with one question: Can our Week 6 Heisman Honorable Mention hit the jackpot on a new NIL deal (for a possible second week in a row)?

Honorable Mention: Diego Pavia, QB, Vanderbilt

Alabama and Auburn can’t agree on much if anything. But we think they can agree they don’t want to see Diego Pavia on the opposing sideline anymore. For the second straight year, the quarterback has knocked off an SEC team from the Heart of Dixie. Last year, he led New Mexico state to a November upset of Auburn. On Saturday, Pavia and the Commodores had all of America cheering them on as they knocked off the Tide in Nashville. It was the first time Vandy had knocked off a top-ranked team; they were 0-60 all-time against Top 5 opponents. Pavia used his arms and legs to help lead the Dores to their historic upset. He was 16-20 in the game for 252 yards and two touchdowns. He also kept the Tide off-balance in the run game. Pavia’s eight-yard run in the final minutes kept the Tide from getting the ball back and securing that the goalposts would be laid to rest in the Cumberland Saturday night—plenty of reason for the quarterback to be excited in the postgame interview.

#5 Jalen Milroe, QB, Alabama (⬇️ 2)

For every ying, there is a yang. Jalen Milore and the Tide flew after last week’s win over Georgia. But just as Roman conquerors were reminded on returning home from their conquests, glory is fleeting. The Tide got off to a slow start in Nashville and could not match Vandy’s energy. Just a week after racing out to a 30-7 halftime lead, Alabama saw themselves down 23-14 at halftime. Bama would rally, but it just wasn’t enough. Milroe still had a big day for the TIde, finishing with 310 yards and two touchdowns, one running and one throwing. His two turnovers proved fatal. 13 of Vanderbilts came from Milroe’s two turnovers, including a pick-six. The Tide look to return to their winning ways this weekend against South Carolina before heading to Knoxville for the third Saturday in October.

#4 Jaxson Dart, QB, Ole Miss (⬆️ 1)

Jaxson Dart and Ole Miss responded nicely after losing to Kentucky two weeks ago. The Rebels traveled to Columbia and took care of business against the Gamecocks. Dart lacked his usual precision, finishing the day 14-27 for 285 touchdowns but failing to register a touchdown. Dart did a good job of helping the Rebels capitalize on Gamecock’s mistakes and turn them into points. All eyes will be on Dart and Rebels this week as they head to Tiger Stadium on Saturday night to take on LSU. This will be a pseudo-play-in game that will still be considered for a shot at playing for an SEC Championship and a spot in the College Football Playoff.

#3 Travis Hunter, ATH, Colorado (⬇️ 2)

I guess the only thing that stops Travis Hunter is the bye week. Hunter and Colorado were on a bye last week, and our Week 5 #1 fell two spots to #3 this week. There was actually only one point separating our #2 and #3 vote-getters, so rumors of disrespect may be more provocative than profound. Hunter and Buffaloes will have a big game Saturday night as they host Kansas State in the late game. Both teams come in 4-1 and a win could put Hunter back in the mix and atop our Week 7 Heisman poll.

#2 Cam Ward, QB, Miami (FL.) (⬆️ 2)

Never say die. What was once reserved for the Goonies may also be true for Cam Ward and the Miami Hurricanes. The U erased a 25-point deficit in ACC After Dark action as the Hurricanes came back to upset Cal in Berkley. Ward led the winning drive and found Elijah Arroyo with 26 seconds left to put Miami ahead and defeat the Bears. Ward has the magic arm to help find and bring Miami to victory. One would have to think the luck may run out at some point, but for a team that has NEVER won an ACC Championship, Ward represents a key opportunity.

#1 Ashton Jeanty, RB, Boise State (⬆️ 1)

The king of our Week 6 Heisman poll is not a quarterback nor a member of one of the power conferences. Ashton Jeanty continues to put up unreal numbers week in and week out, showing that he is the best running back in the land. Jeanty had only 13 carries and played in one half of football on Saturday against Utah State. While they didn’t say, we’re sure the Aggies were grateful. Jeanty rushed for 186 yards and three touchdowns on the half. He continues to build upon his 10+ yards per rush average for the season. Jeanty is special, and quotes from his coach Spencer Danielson this week show it’s now about him. Instead, it’s about his team. “‘What does the team need?’ That’s what we’ve got, especially when it’s led by a guy like Ashton Jeanty. He was waiting for me on Tuesday before practice to find out if he could get on special teams.” Make sure to find a Boisie game to watch this season if you have not seen him yet.

Photo Credit: Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Let’s hope you didn’t go apple or pumpkin picking last week.
