Penn State beat Illinois 21-7, in a matchup of Top 20 teams in Happy Valley. \u00a0It was a hard-fought game between two teams vying to establish themselves in a crowded Big Ten. \u00a0After a first half that ended with the score tied at seven, the game was still up for grabs into the fourth quarter. \u00a0Then, Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer<\/a> threw his first interception of the season, with AJ Harris<\/a> being the beneficiary. \u00a0The Penn State offense capitalized on the turnover, by scoring a touchdown to set the final score of 21-7. \u00a0While Illinois scored the first points of the game, Penn State scored 21 unanswered to win the matchup.<\/p>\n

This was Penn State’s first Big Ten game of the season, and as expected<\/a> it was a different feel than the first two games. \u00a0Coach James Franklin asked for “white out energy,” and the fans responded. \u00a0Franklin, after the game, said “It was phenomenal.” \u00a0Despite Penn State’s struggles early on, the crowd stayed loud and made things difficult for the Illinois offense. \u00a0Similar to other games this season, the second half was much better for Penn State than the first half was. \u00a0The experienced coaching staff continues to show its ability to make the necessary halftime adjustments.<\/p>\n

No Offense, but the Line is Pretty Good<\/h3>\n

The Penn State offensive line proved to be a major differentiating factor for the team. \u00a0While they surrendered two sacks to the Illinois defense, their presence was felt more in the running game. \u00a0Penn State was able to eat up clock when it needed to, and significantly out-gained Illinois on the ground.<\/p>\n

For the first time this season, quarterback Drew Allar<\/a> did not throw a touchdown pass. \u00a0On the surface, that would be cause for concern. \u00a0However, with Penn State’s offensive line<\/a> and talent at running back<\/a>, it was not an issue at all. \u00a0Walking off the field after the game, Allar said “I always tell the O-line, we go as they go.”<\/p>\n

Both Nick Singleton<\/a> and Kaytron Allen<\/a> had great games. \u00a0Franklin said after the game, “I can’t imagine there is a combination of better backs in the country.” \u00a0Both Singleton and Allen had a rushing touchdown. \u00a0Allen had a season-high 102 yards, going over 100 yards for a second time this season. \u00a0While Singleton fell short of the 100-yard milestone in the game, he did gain 94.<\/p>\n

Tight end Tyler Warren<\/a> was involved in the rushing attack again, in a much more direct way than a normal tight end. \u00a0After throwing a passing touchdown in last week’s win against Kent State<\/a>, Warren ran for a touchdown in this game. \u00a0His rushing touchdown was the first score for Penn State, tied the game at seven, and set the tone for the rest of the offense.<\/p>\n

Defensive Details<\/h3>\n

Defensive coordinator Tom Allen called another good game for the Penn State defense. \u00a0Similar to prior games, he made the necessary adjustments at halftime. \u00a0Illinois only gained 39 yards in the second half and did not score after a touchdown on their first offensive drive. \u00a0The defensive squad forced two turnovers, an interception, and a fumble.<\/p>\n

The defense held its own in a multitude of ways. \u00a0First, against the pass. \u00a0Harris was the first opposing player to intercept an Altmyer pass this season. \u00a0In addition to that, the defense only allowed 185 yards passing. \u00a0They sacked the quarterback seven times. \u00a0No Illinois wide receiver produced over 49 yards. \u00a0Second, against the run, \u00a0Penn State only allowed 34 yards. \u00a0When it became a two-score game in the fourth quarter, the defense really shined, as it knew a pass was coming, and was able to provide a lot of pressure on Altmyer.<\/p>\n

Always Room for Improvement<\/h3>\n

Penn State has now entered its Big Ten schedule. \u00a0Consequently, games should be expected to be tough, closer, and potentially down to the wire. \u00a0In those cases, it is important to have a trusted kicker. \u00a0Special Teams<\/a> need to play well, and that part of the team has not pulled its weight. \u00a0Specifically, kicker Sander Sahaydak<\/a> continued to struggle. \u00a0He missed his only field goal attempt to start the year, in the win against West Virginia<\/a>. \u00a0Then, Sahaydak made both of his field goal attempts against Bowling Green, before not attempting one against Kent State. \u00a0Facing Illinois, he missed two more field goals, both from 40 yards. \u00a0The misses were in the second quarter and the fourth quarter. \u00a0Coordinator Justin Lustig and Franklin will have some decisions to make on what to do at kicker. \u00a0Ryan Barker<\/a> made his only extra point attempt, while Sahaydak converted both of his.<\/p>\n

Penalties were a talking point again in this game. \u00a0On the way off the field at the end of the game, \u00a0Franklin said, “We have to clean up the penalties.” \u00a0Penn State was called for six penalties, covering 63 yards. \u00a0The timing of Penn State’s penalties was impactful. \u00a0For example, on the first drive of the game, Abdul Carter<\/a> was flagged for being offsides. \u00a0When the quarterback saw that he had a free play, he took a chance downfield, and it was complete. \u00a0Illinois scored a touchdown on that drive. \u00a0Additionally, Penn State could have also taken a two-score lead earlier than it ultimately did. \u00a0Harris returned the Altmyer interception to the end zone. \u00a0However, the score was negated because of an illegal block call on Penn State.<\/p>\n
