Below is a preview of the Penn State vs. Illinois matchup.<\/p>\n<p>Penn State has two wins against MAC teams, and a victory against West Virginia, a Power Five opponent.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Nittany Lions were able to overcome relatively slow starts in each of their games.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>However, Illinois will not be as forgiving this week.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Illini have built confidence in their ability to win on the road.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As Penn State head coach James Franklin said Monday at his press conference. \u201cThey\u2019re coming in here confident, already going on the road and finding success in a tough environment.\u201d \u00a0Illinois defeated ranked Nebraska in Lincoln last week.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Franklin is looking for Penn State\u2019s fans to bring a \u201cwhite-out energy\u201d to the Big Ten opener.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Nittany Nation, we need WHITE OUT\u2026<\/p>\n<p>ENERGY\u2755See you this Saturday back home in Beaver Stadium. <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/WeArePennState?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#WeArePennState<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 James Franklin (@coachjfranklin) <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/coachjfranklin\/status\/1838015269496611166?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">September 23, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>#19 Illinois (4-0) at #9 Penn State (3-0) Preview<\/h2>\n<p><strong>When &amp; Where: <\/strong>Saturday, September 28, 7:30 pm ET, at Penn State<\/p>\n<p><strong>Last Week&#8217;s Results: <\/strong>Penn State won at home, defeating Kent State 56-0.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Illinois faced Nebraska on the road and won 31-24.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Last Season&#8217;s Results: <\/strong>Penn State finished ranked #13 after a 10-3 season that ended with a Peach Bowl loss to Ole Miss.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Illinois finished with a record of 5-7, including Big Ten wins over Maryland, Minnesota, and Indiana.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Series History: <\/strong>Penn State leads the series all-time by a 21 to six margin.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The teams met last season when Penn State won 30-13.<\/p>\n<h2>Penn State vs. Illinois Preview: Nittany Lions to Watch<\/h2>\n<h3>Defensive Coordinator Tom Allen<\/h3>\n<p>As a preview of Penn State vs. Illinois, Penn State\u2019s defense has performed well overall so far this season.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Allen\u2019s unit ranks ninth in total defense, allowing 229.3 yards per game.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In fairness, a big driver of that was giving up only 67 yards to Kent State. \u00a0The Golden Flashes are the lowest-ranked team in the country. Of his defense, Franklin said, \u201cDefensively, when you hold any D1 team to 67 yards, that\u2019s hard to do.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Allen is a Nittany Lion to watch this week due to the continuous adjustments he has made and will need to continue to make.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In the wins against both <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2024\/08\/31\/penn-state-beats-west-virginia-34-12-thunder-lightning\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">West Virginia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2024\/09\/07\/penn-state-survives-scare-beats-bowling-green-34-27\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Bowling Green<\/a>, the opponent was significantly winning the time of possession battle early on.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>However, as a nod to the symmetry of football, as Allen made adjustments, and the offense produced better, the time of possession returned to where it was expected to be.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in 15 years, Allen coached from the booth last week, instead of the sideline.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Commenting on that change, Franklin said, \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of different ways to do things that work.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He also stated that they would decide on if Allen would be on the field or in the booth on a week-to-week basis.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>However, Allen, Franklin, and the players were all happy with the results.<\/p>\n<p>Heading into Big Ten play, the defense\u2019s ability to stop the Illinois offense will be a key factor in the game.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/luke-altmyer-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luke Altmyer<\/a>, the Illinois quarterback, has thrown for 10 touchdowns with no interceptions so far this season.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/kaden-feagin-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kaden Feagin<\/a>, the leading rusher, has 242 yards and three touchdowns.<\/p>\n<h3>Wide Receiver Omari Evans<\/h3>\n<p>Penn State\u2019s offense is fortunate to have arguably the best <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2024\/06\/14\/penn-state-running-backs-two-headed-monster\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">running back tandem<\/a> in the country.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>However, the duo of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/nicholas-singleton-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nick Singleton<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/kaytron-allen-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kaytron Allen<\/a> cannot be solely relied upon to carry the load for Andy Kotelnicki\u2019s offense.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That is where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/omari-evans-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Omari Evans<\/a> comes in, and as a preview of Penn State vs. Illinois, makes him a Nittany Lion to watch.<\/p>\n<p>During his Monday press conference, Franklin stated, \u201cBeing able to run to win games, and throw to win games is very important.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Quarterback <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/drew-allar-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Drew Allar<\/a> has been performing well, and is hitting his stride with Kotelnicki.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Part of that was finding a rhythm in the passing game.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Not surprisingly, contributions in the passing attack have come from the running backs, the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2024\/07\/22\/2024-penn-state-tight-ends-preview-optionality-is-key\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">tight ends<\/a>, and of course the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2024\/06\/30\/2024-wide-receivers-preview-penn-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">wide receivers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Evans has been able to establish himself as a reliable deep threat for Allar.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He leads the team at 25.6 yards per catch and is second on the team (behind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/tyler-warren-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyler Warren<\/a>) with 205 yards receiving.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>His eight receptions tie him with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/harrison-wallace-iii-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trey Wallace<\/a> for second behind Warren\u2019s 16 catches.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The season-long reception for Evans, and the team, was his 59-yard touchdown against Kent State. \u00a0He also had a 55-yard grab against West Virginia. \u00a0The threat of Evans stretching the field could open up the running game (reverse of Kotelnicki&#8217;s usual strategy), and open up patterns underneath for Warren, Wallace, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/julian-fleming-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Julian Fleming<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Defensive Tackle Zane Durant<\/h3>\n<p>It is not often that a defensive tackle with six tackles and a sack through three games is highlighted, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/zane-durant-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zane Durant<\/a> is a Nittany Lion to watch.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>His stability and production on the interior of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2024\/07\/10\/penn-state-2024-defensive-line-preview\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">defensive line<\/a> is paramount for Allen\u2019s defense to perform, especially as it works to offset some key injuries.<\/p>\n<p>In the secondary, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/kevin-winston-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KJ Winston<\/a> is out with what Franklin deemed a <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2024\/09\/20\/penn-state-defensive-star-suffers-long-term-injury\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">\u201clong-term\u201d injury<\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That injury trickles down to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2024\/06\/23\/penn-state-2024-linebackers-season-preview\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">linebacker<\/a> level.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Instead of the hybrid 4-2-5 alignment that <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2024\/06\/07\/tom-allen-penn-state-defense-expectations\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Allen likes to run<\/a>, a more traditional 4-3 formation could offset Winston\u2019s absence.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 O<\/span>ne of the linebackers that was expected to step up was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/dominic-deluca-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dom DeLuca.<\/a> However, he was injured in the first half of the Kent State game and did not return.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 Subsequently, <\/span>an option to help out in the linebacker corp is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/abdul-carter-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Abdul Carter.<\/a>\u00a0 He is making the move to defensive end this season.<\/p>\n<p>Having Durant provide a solid foundation in the interior of the line is important.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 His presence quiets the noise from the musical chairs driven by the injuries. \u00a0<\/span>It gives Illinois something to game plan around. \u00a0It opens up lanes for the linebackers to rush the passer and\/or stop the run. \u00a0Additionally, it covers for a suddenly less experienced secondary.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Of Durant\u2019s shoddy statistics, Franklin reinforced that he, \u201cHas been as impactful on the quarterback as anybody, and if you are just strictly looking at a stat sheet, it wouldn\u2019t tell you that.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_64966\"
