Many fans are used to terms like Power Five or Group of Five, but those terms and concepts are now antiquated. The Pac-12 has gone the way of the dodo bird, and the Southeastern Conference and Big Ten have emerged as the “Big Two,” leaving “everyone else” to fight for the scraps. Whether it is a media rights deal or College Football Playoff appearances, the Big Ten and SEC are in firm control of the College Football landscape. Before we get into the Week 4 betting lines, we’ll examine how the SEC’s play on the field has given them an advantage over their B1G counterparts.

B1G SEC Wins

The SEC’s nonconference play wraps up this week, mostly, until the ACC-SEC rivalry games during the last week of the season. The SEC has done its work in making a statement with key wins on the field. The SEC locked out five of the top six spots in this week’s AP Poll. Each of the team’s plays has helped the SEC distance itself from its Big Ten counterparts.

#1 Texas traveled to Ann Arbor two weeks ago and dominated the defending national champions on Fox and the Big Ten’s Big Noon Kickoff. The spotlight stayed on the Horns as backup Archie Manning stepped in for an injured Quinn Ewers, racking up five touchdowns.

#2 Georgia started the party in Week 1 by shutting down Clemson to open the season. Clemson is the second-highest-ranked team in this week’s poll. The Tigers are ranked 21st, which is not great for the ACC. Maybe they can sue their way to the top?

#4 Alabama jumped all over Wisconsin last week at Camp Randall and for a second straight week, an SEC team dominated Big Noon Kickoff. The win also hurt the narrative that SEC teams don’t play north of the Mason-Dixon Line.

#5 Ole Miss continued to put up video game numbers on offense last week against Wake Forest. While they have yet to play a team of merit, Jaxson Dart’s play keeps him in the Heisman conversation. The Deamon Deacons canceled their 2025 trip to Oxford after the game, leaving Lane Kiffin salty.

Speaking of video game numbers, the #6 Tennessee may want to move off Freshman mode. The Vols have scored 69, 51, and an eye-popping 71 points this season.

AP Polling + CFB Playoff

In the new 12-team College Football Playoff, the five highest-ranked conference champions will earn automatic bids, while the seven highest-ranked remaining teams will fill the other spots. The Big Ten and SEC teams currently occupy 16 of the 25 spots in the Week 4 poll. This leaves the rest of college football to compete for the three remaining automatic bids for conference champions. Here is a look at what the CFB Playoff would look like after the season’s first three weeks.

Top Four Seeds:
#1 Texas Longhorns

#2 Ohio State Buckeyes

#3 Miami Hurricanes

#4 Utah Utes

First Round Matchups:

#5 Georgia vs. #12 Northern Illinois

#6 Alabama vs. #11 Penn State

#7 Ole Miss vs. #10 Oregon

#8 Tennessee vs. #9 Missouri

A quick look shows that the “Big Two” aren’t on equal footing. The SEC would have the #1 team in the playoffs and host all first-round games. Playoff games in Athens, Tuscaloosa, Oxford, and Knoxville would make great eye candy. We would even have an SEC matchup with the #8-#9 game.

Week 4 SEC Betting Lines

We still have a long way to go in the season, but the SEC has done the necessary work to help set the narrative and the pace, leaving the rest of college football to pick up their scraps.

Rankings are based on the AP media poll.
