The Lombardy Trophy is awarded yearly to the top lineman or linebacker. And, for this year, a pair of tight ends hit the list as well.<\/p>\n<p>In the first week, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2024\/07\/29\/big-ten-lands-12-players-on-2024-maxwell-award-watchlist\/\" target=\"_self\">Maxwell Award<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2024\/07\/30\/big-ten-lands-16-players-on-the-bronko-nagurski-trophy-watchlist\/\" target=\"_self\">Bronko Nagurski Trophy<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2024\/07\/30\/13-big-ten-players-on-the-outland-trophy-watchlist\/\" target=\"_self\">Outland Trophy<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2024\/07\/31\/7-big-ten-players-land-on-jim-thorpe-award-watchlist\/\" target=\"_self\">Jim Thorpe Award<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2024\/08\/01\/eight-big-ten-players-land-on-paul-hornung-watchlist\/\" target=\"_self\">Paul Hornung Award<\/a>, Wuerffel Trophy,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2024\/08\/05\/five-big-ten-punters-land-on-ray-guy-award-watchlist\/\" target=\"_self\">Ray Gay Award<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2024\/08\/04\/seven-big-ten-kickers-lou-groza-watchlist\/\" target=\"_self\">Lou Groza Awards<\/a>\u00a0were all previewed. Last week, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2024\/08\/05\/big-ten-lands-nine-on-walter-camp-award-watchlist\/\" target=\"_self\">Walter Camp Player of the Year Award,<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2024\/08\/08\/big-ten-lands-17-on-doak-walker-award-watchlist\/\" target=\"_self\">\u00a0Doak Walker Award,<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2024\/08\/08\/big-ten-lands-six-on-biletnikoff-award-watchlist\/\" target=\"_self\">Biletnikoff Award<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2024\/08\/10\/four-big-ten-quarterbacks-land-on-davey-obrien-award-watchlist\/\" target=\"_self\">Davey O\u2019Brien Award<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2024\/08\/14\/big-ten-lands-10-on-mackey-award-watchlist\/\" target=\"_self\">Mackey Award,<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2024\/08\/15\/six-big-ten-centers-land-on-rimington-trophy-watchlist\/\" target=\"_self\">Rimington Trophy<\/a>\u00a0watchlists dropped.<\/p>\n<p>This week, the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2024\/08\/15\/19-big-ten-players-land-on-bednarik-award-watchlist\/\" target=\"_self\">Bednarik Award<\/a> watchlist preceded the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2024\/08\/16\/16-big-ten-linebackers-land-on-butkus-award-watchlist\/\" target=\"_self\">Butkus Award<\/a> watchlist.<\/p>\n<h2>18 Big Ten Players Land on Lombardi Trophy Watchlist<\/h2>\n<h3>A Quartet of Buckeyes<\/h3>\n<p>Four Buckeyes tied with Oklahoma State and Alabama for the most in the nation on the Lombardi Trophy watchlist. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/donovan-jackson-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Donovan Jackson<\/a> has made 26 consecutive starts for the Buckeyes and he appeared in another 13 games before that. Jackson is going for his third straight First-Team All-Big Ten selection and improving his 2025 NFL Draft stock.<\/p>\n<p>The Buckeyes&#8217; defensive line is loaded. In the middle,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/tyleik-williams-1.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-30_cfb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyleik Williams<\/a> is a fourth-year defensive tackle for the Buckeyes and broke out last year. For his career, Williams has amassed 90 tackles, 19 tackles for loss, three sacks, five pass breakups, a forced fumble, and recovered a fumble for a touchdown.<\/p>\n<p>On the edges,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jack-sawyer-2.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-08-15_cfb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jack Sawyer<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jt-tuimoloau-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jaylahn Tuimoloau<\/a> could be the top one-two punch at defensive end. Last year, Sawyer accounted for 48 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, six-and-a-half sacks, two pass breakups, and two forced fumbles. Tuimoloau is coming off of a career-best season where he amassed 38 tackles, seven tackles for loss, five sacks, two pass breakups, and recovered a fumble. He\u2019s looking to make his third First-Team All-Big Ten in 2024.<\/p>\n<h3>Three Hawkeyes<\/h3>\n<p>Iowa has a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2024\/07\/23\/the-best-big-ten-linebackers-returning-in-2024\/\" target=\"_self\">pair of linebackers<\/a> on the Lombardi Trophy watchlist. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jay-higgins-1.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-30_cfb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jay Higgins<\/a> led the country with 171 tackles a year ago to go with five tackles for loss, two sacks, an interception, four pass breakups, a forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries. He was a First-Team All-American. Beside him is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/nick-jackson-2.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-30_cfb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nick Jackson<\/a>. He transferred in last year and posted his fourth 100-tackle season. His 464 career tackles are 12th-most in college football history and he\u2019s within 114 tackles for the most tackles in college football history.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/logan-jones-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Logan Jones<\/a> started his Iowa career on the defensive line. After two years, Jones flipped to the offensive side before the 2022 season. He won the starting center job and started all 13 games for the Hawkeyes.<\/p>\n<h3>Three From Michigan<\/h3>\n<p>Two of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2024\/06\/06\/big-ten-defenders-named-to-2024-lott-impact-trophy-watchlist\/\" target=\"_self\">top defensive linemen<\/a>\u00a0in the nation,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/mason-graham-2.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-06-05_cfb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mason Graham<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/kenneth-grant-2.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-30_cfb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kenneth Grant<\/a> are set to lead Michigan in 2024. Graham is coming off his first First-Team All-Big Ten selection. He has amassed 63 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, over five sacks, two pass breakups, a forced fumble, and a recovered fumble. Despite only logging five starts in his time with the Wolverines, Grant has the attention of scouts everywhere. He\u2019s an athletic freak with 29 games of experience over the last two seasons. In the CFP National Championship, he accounted for a sack, a pass breakup, and two solo tackles.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/colston-loveland-1.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-08-14_cfb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colston Loveland<\/a> has NFL written all over him. He was also honored on the Biletnikoff Award and Walter Camp Award watchlist. Last year, he appeared in all 15 games and recorded at least one catch in each. In total, Loveland amassed 649 yards and four touchdowns with 45 catches for the Wolverines.<\/p>\n<h3>Quack Quack Quack<\/h3>\n<p>Over the last three years,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jeffrey-bassa-1.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-30_cfb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeffrey Bassa<\/a> has been a productive defender. Bassa moved to linebacker from safety before the 2022 season and didn\u2019t miss a step. For his career, Bassa has logged 182 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, three interceptions (one pick-six), and broke up two other passes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/ajani-cornelius-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ajani Cornelius<\/a>\u00a0transferred to Oregon from Rhode Island before the 2023 season. With the Rams, Cornelius started 11 games between 2021 and 2022 and earned First-Team All-Colonial Athletic Association honors. He came right in and became the Ducks\u2019 starting right tackle for all 14 games last year. He did not allow a single sack in 512 pass-blocking snaps.<\/p>\n<p>Opposite Cornelius, <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/josh-conerly-jr-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Josh Conerly, Jr.<\/a> has been a stalwart on the Ducks&#8217; offensive line. In his two seasons, he started every game last year and appeared in every game as a freshman. He was one of the best tackles in the nation with only one sack off 511 pass-blocking snaps on one of the best offenses in the county.<\/p>\n<h3>Two Trojans<\/h3>\n<p>The best defensive tackles from the West Coast four joining the Big Ten, USC\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/bear-alexander-1.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-30_cfb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bear Alexander<\/a> transferred in from Georgia after the 2022 season and broke out for the Trojans last year. He recorded 48 tackles, six-and-a-half tackles for loss, one-and-a-half sacks, and broke up four passes.<\/p>\n<p>A tackle-turned-center,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jonah-monheim-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0Jonah Monheim<\/a> is a fifth-year senior and returning captain for the Trojans. He was the first USC freshman to log starts at both tackles in 2021. In his career, Monheim has started 34 games in total; 18 at right tackle, 12 at left tackle, and four at right guard.<\/p>\n<h3>Aireontae Ersery, Minnesota<\/h3>\n<p>The Golden Gophers have a star at left tackle with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/aireontae-ersery-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aireontae Ersery<\/a>. After taking a couple of years to get going when he broke through, he made it worthwhile. He enters 2024 after starting each of the last 26 games for the Golden Gophers. Ersery was an AP First-Team All-Big Ten selection a year ago and earned Second-Team honors from the conference.<\/p>\n<h3>Xander Mueller, Northwestern<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/xander-mueller-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Xander Mueller<\/a>\u00a0has been Northwestern\u2019s leading linebacker for the last two years. He\u2019s coming off his first 100-tackle season and has amassed a total of 197 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, seven-and-a-half sacks, five interceptions, four pass breakups, forced a fumble, and recovered a fumble over the last two seasons.<\/p>\n<h3>Abdul Carter, Penn State<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/abdul-carter-1.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-06-05_cfb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Abdul Carter<\/a> is making a position change for Penn State in the fall. After earning First-Team All-Big Ten honors as a linebacker, Carter will be lining up as a defensive end. Last year, he made 48 tackles, five-and-a-half tackles for loss, four-and-a-half sacks, five pass breakups, an interception, and a forced fumble.
