The class finished 14th according to ESPN. While the Vols did have some decommitments this year, this is still a class to be excited about. Let’s take a look at some of the players.

Recruits

For starters, how about Trey Smith. He’s the #1 overall player in the country and is a Vol at offensive tackle. He’s out of Jackson, Tennessee and is arguably the most highly touted player in the country. He narrowed his choices on signing day to Ole Miss, Alabama, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Clemson and obviously Tennessee. This was Tennessee’s biggest get in this class.

Maleik Gray is a four-star outside linebacker. He was the No. 7 prospect in his respected position. He’s from LaVergne, Tennessee, and had several visits to big schools as well. Schools such as Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Notre Dame, and Michigan were just some of the schools targeting him. Gray was #90 on ESPN’S 300.

Ty Chandler is a four-star running back and is the #9 player in his position. He is another big play maker for the Vols on offense. He is 101st in the ESPN 300, and had visits to big schools such as Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Nebraska, and Notre Dame. The Vols could use another explosive running back, especially since Alvin Kamara is leaving for the NFL, and Jalen Hurd unexpectedly leaving back in November. Currently, John Kelly seems to be a rising star for the Vols at that position.

Tennessee did get two more top 300 players. Eric Crosby came in at #226 on ESPN’S 300 at defensive tackle. The other one being LaTrell Bumphus, ranked 263rd on ESPN’S 300.

Wrap Up

In total, Tennessee had one five-star, six four-stars and 20 three-star players in this class. Some people may look at the three-star numbers and think this class isn’t that good. Let’s be reminded some of the best players in the NFL weren’t even ranked coming out of high school or were barely ranked. Let’s see what Tennessee can do with this incoming Vols class.

Main Photo

Embed from Getty Images

Tennessee Volunteers 2017 Recruiting Class The Tennessee 2017 recruiting class has come to an end. May not have been the best class under head coach Butch Jones but it’s still pretty solid.
