Just an hour before kickoff, New Jersey saw its first glimpse of the sun in what seemed like weeks of storm clouds and constant overcast. The conditions were perfect for a game day. And a near-perfect game day it was for Rutgers, earning a 52-3 win over Wagner.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The game festivities started off with a special touch. Saturday, Samuel Brown IV was more than just the proud parent of a Rutgers running back. He held the honor of singing the national anthem to a stadium full of saluting fans in scarlet.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Rutgers\u2019 Offense Showed Long-Lasting Strength<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rutgers\u2019 first drive of the game ended in settling for a field goal. When another fourth down came around in the second drive, Rutgers fans began to doubt their predictions of the game\u2019s turnout. Was the team going to have to settle for <em>another <\/em>field goal?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They decided to go for it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A four-yard pass from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/gavin-wimsatt-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gavin Wimsatt<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/christian-dremel-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Christian Dremel<\/a> brought the Scarlet Knights their first of what would be seven touchdowns. Special teams had an easy day being that Rutgers scored on every single drive. The remaining touchdowns were seen from Wimsatt (two), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/kyle-monangai-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyle Monangai<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jashon-benjamin-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ja\u2019shon Benjamin<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/aaron-young-5.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aaron Young<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/samuel-brown-v-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Samual Brown V<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rutgers passed for a total of 169 yards, coming from a combination of Wimsatt and backup quarterback <strong>Ajani Sheppard<\/strong>. Sheppard made his season debut later in the game when Rutgers had way past secured the win.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jaquae-jackson-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">JaQuae Jackson<\/a> was the leading receiver this week with 71 yards gained.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team rushed a total of 268 yards. To no surprise, the leading running back this week was once again Monangai, who rushed for 87 yards from 19 attempts.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The Force is Strong with the Rutgers Defense<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A cold chill sweeps through the stadium as the familiar notes from Star Wars <em>Imperial Attack<\/em> flood the speakers. Rutgers\u2019 defense, nicknamed the Dark Side, has taken the field.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wagner\u2019s quarterback, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/steven-krajewski-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steven Krajewski<\/a>, was put through the wringer and suffered three sacks. These sacks were completed by the efforts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/mohamed-toure-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mohamed Toure<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/shaquan-loyal-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shaquan Loyal<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/isaiah-iton-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Isaiah Iton<\/a>. Toure had a strong performance this week, with four tackles and three assists. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/max-melton-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Max Melton<\/a>, the a-lister of Rutgers\u2019 defense, achieved one tackle and one assist this week.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the game\u2019s end, Wagner had rushed for 83 yards and passed for a meek 23. The Dark Side proved to be a force you should not reckon with.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Tom Masella Shows Irritation with Rutgers<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wagner\u2019s head coach, <strong>Tom Masella<\/strong>, showed visible irritation during the fourth quarter. He seemingly was under the impression that given the huge gap on the scoreboard, Rutgers would ease up during the last quarter and give Wagner a break.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2023\/08\/24\/greg-schiano-is-hopeful-for-a-scarlet-knights-bowl-game\/\" target=\"_self\">Greg Schiano<\/a> and the Rutgers squad had a different ending in mind. To Masella\u2019s dismay, the Scarlet Knights kept their momentum until the game\u2019s end. When you\u2019re in Rutgers\u2019 shoes and a bowl game is a possible reality, every point matters. Unfortunately for Wagner, this was a game Rutgers knew they had a chance to run up the scoreboard.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Big Ten Standings<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After this weekend\u2019s roundups, Rutgers sits in fifth place out of seven teams in the Big Ten East. Michigan State and Indiana fall beneath them.
