The Tigers were in town for both teams\u2019 SEC opener. The pregame fanfare included\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">SEC Nation<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Marty and McGee<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, and\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Paul Finebaum Show<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0on the State campus. Starkville was on an impressive display with cowbells as the soundtrack. But at the end of the day all that faded for MSU fans. The Bulldogs were blown out by the Bayou Bengals 41-14.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The game had created a buzz that attracted national attention too, as a potential barn-burner. The legendary coach, prognosticator, and co-host of\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">College Gameday<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Lee Corso<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, picked the Bulldogs to win the contest. Former Alabama, Saints, and Panthers\u2019 safety,<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Roman Harper<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0also picked the Dawgs. Now co-host of\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">SEC Nation,<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Harper actually wore a maroon suit during the show.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">However, from the opening kickoff until the final cowbell, Mississippi State suffered on both sides of the ball. Whatever holes were seen in the 14th-ranked Tigers\u2019 previous performance had been plugged.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Daniels-Nabers Air Show<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">LSU quarterback\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jayden-daniels-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jayden Daniels<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and wide receiver\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/malik-nabers-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Malik Nabers<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0caused the most turmoil for the Dawgs. Nabers had an amazing 13 receptions for 239 of the total 367 yards in the air. He was also responsible for two touchdowns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Daniels completed 30 of 34 passing attempts for a record-breaking 88.2%. That\u2019s the highest completion percentage by a Tiger since\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">JaMarcus Russell\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">in 2006. Daniels was also the leading rusher with 15 runs for 64 yards and two rushing touchdowns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Dawgs are probably wanting to avoid quarterbacks named Jayden. Last week\u2019s game featured a running attack from Arizona quarterback\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jayden-de-laura-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jayden de Laura<\/span><\/a><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In the post-game press conference, LSU head coach\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Brian Kelly<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0had this to say. \u201cDaniels and Nabers hooking up to the level that we\u2019ve always wanted to see, we saw that and that\u2019s certainly fun,\u201d Kelly said. \u201cIf that continues to show itself, we\u2019re a pretty good football team. Defensively, there were many questions. It\u2019s just a matter of getting a lot of young players and new players together. It\u2019s just a matter of time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Where Were the Bulldogs?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Quarterback\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/will-rogers-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Will Rogers<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0probably had the worst day of his career. He went 11 of 28 in passing, or 39%, for 103 yards. That\u2019s the lowest of his career. Perhaps the transition from\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Mike Leach\u2019s<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Air Raid to offensive coordinator\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kevin Barbay\u2019s<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0pro-style offense is problematic for the senior.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In his post-game press conference Bulldog head coach\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Zach Arnett<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0said this about Rogers\u2019 performance. \u201cHe missed some throws that he needs to be able to complete if they\u2019re there,\u201d Arnett said. \u201cHe was not getting a whole lot of help in protection, so we didn\u2019t hold up to their pass rush early on.\u201d To that end, Rogers was sacked four times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">State came into the game with the second-leading running game in the SEC. In the first half, they had a negative 12 yards rushing. In the end, they only totaled 94 yards to LSU\u2019s 163.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">State\u2019s secondary was almost nonexistent. Nabers seemed impossible to cover, but there was no adjustment as in double coverage. The defensive backs were a question mark coming into the season, and that continues to be the case. There is no definitive starter at the last corner position. It keeps rotating between\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/esaias-furdge-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Esaias Furdge<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/decarlos-nicholson-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">DeCarlos Nicholson<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Nabers burned both of them multiple times.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Fans Get Restless<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As the frustration mounted, the MSU fan base started chanting \u201cWe want Mike.\u201d They were calling for\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/mike-wright-8.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Mike Wright<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. He\u2019s the Vanderbilt transfer who created excitement in the season opener against Southeastern Louisiana. Wright had a total of 95 yards back then running the wildcat formation. However, he hasn\u2019t been given the opportunities the fans believe he should. Arnett chimed in about that. \u201cWe\u2019re not spending a lot of time paying attention to chants from the student section.\u201d That being said, Wright did come in late in the fourth quarter to throw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Harmon. However, it was too little, too late.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Conspicuously absent from the last two games was\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/creed-whittemore-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Creed Whittemore<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. He had an impressive 33-yard touchdown running a wheel route in the season opener.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bright Spots?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Believe it or not, there were some bright spots for the Bulldogs.\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/joquavious-marks-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Woody Marks\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">took in his 200th reception making him the leading pass receiver in the MSU program. In fact, since he came to Starkville in 2020, he has had a reception in all 39 games in which he has played.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/lideatrick-griffin-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Tulu Griffin<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0had a couple of bright spots too. He is responsible for the Dawg&#8217;s first score toward the end of the first half. This was Griffin\u2019s first rushing touchdown. He also showed his talent returning kickoffs. On three returns, he posted 102 yards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On defense, the duo of\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jett-johnson-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jett Johnson<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/nathaniel-watson-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bookie Watson<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0continue to impress. Johnson outdid his performance last week with 14 tackles, three solo. Watson followed suit with 13 tackles, one solo. Still, the LSU offense racked up 530 total yards to State\u2019s 201.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Safety\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/shawn-preston-jr-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Shawn Preston Jr<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. made what most saw as a tremendous tackle on Daniels. Commentator\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jesse Palmer<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0called it textbook. However, he was cited for targeting and ejected from the game. This means he has to miss the first half of the South Carolina game. Arnett says he is sending in the video of the play in an effort to get it overturned. If that happens, Preston will be able to play.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Keep Moving Forward<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Rogers has been called the most prolific passer the SEC has seen. However, in the LSU game, he was anything but prolific. He almost seemed lost against the Tigers in Barbay\u2019s offense. Against the Bayou Bengals, MSU passed 29 times and ran the ball 21. Still, Barbay has not achieved a happy balance. There is a stable of running backs to augment the stellar play of Marks, that have not been tapped. Whittemore,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/seth-davis-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Seth Davis<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, and\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jeffery-pittman-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jeffery Pittman<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0are just a few who could make an amazing running game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">If the Dawgs are going to compete from hereon in the SEC, something needs to happen. Otherwise, they will live up to the preseason predictions of finishing last in the SEC West.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Arnett has now suffered his first loss as a head coach, and it was done in bone-chilling fashion. As usual, he is taking the blame, but challenging his organization as well. \u201cI\u2019ve done a very poor job of my evaluation of where we\u2019re at as a football team. We have to decide how we want to respond to this. You\u2019ve got two ways you can respond to a like this. We\u2019re either gonna do the hard things and get better, or we\u2019re not, and losing like this becomes commonplace.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">State\u2019s next game is Arnett\u2019s first road game against South Carolina. Considering how tough the Gamecocks played number one Georgia, the Dawgs had better be up to the challenge.
