We started\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2023\/08\/16\/2023-kentucky-position-preview-quarterbacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">with the quarterbacks,\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">moved\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2023\/08\/19\/2023-kentucky-running-backs-preview\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">to the running backs,\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and then\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2023\/08\/21\/2023-kentucky-position-preview-receivers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the receivers.<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0This time out we\u2019re looking at the big guys up front whose job is to protect\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/devin-leary-1.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-21_cfb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Devin Leary<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. We begin our 2023 Kentucky Position Previews: Linemen with a look at the offensive line. In addition, we&#8217;ll move to the defense starting with the line.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Back To What\u2019s Expected<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">For anyone who\u2019s watched Kentucky football over the last few years one of the hallmarks of the program is the offensive line. Under the late\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">John Schlarman<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0the name \u201cBig Blue Wall\u201d was coined for their abilities. In fact, they were one of the finalists for the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Joe Moore Award\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">for the nation\u2019s best line in 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Unfortunately for the Big Blue Nation, 2022 was not up to expectations. The group allowed 47 sacks which was fifth most in the nation and second-most among power-five schools. Only Boston College was worse. They also struggled opening up running lanes as the Cats only averaged 3.26 yards per carry. As a result Stoops and offensive line coach\u00a0<\/span><strong>Zach Yenser<\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0looked to the transfer portal for instant help.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Instant Impact Transfers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kentucky landed in the top 20\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/Season\/2023-Football\/TransferTeamRankings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">in the transfer portal rankings.<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0A big part of that was four offensive linemen heading to Lexington. They include\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/marques-cox-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Marques Cox<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0from Northern Illinois,\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Courtland Ford<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0of USC,\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Tanner Bowles<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0from Alabama, and\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ben Christman<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0of Ohio State. They look to provide a huge boost for the line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bowles, a Kentucky native, is listed as a guard but played all five positions for the Crimson Tide. Cox graded exceptionally high last year before suffering a season-ending injury ironically in a game against Kentucky. Christman was a\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/player\/ben-christman-46049924\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">four-star player at Ohio State<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0before leaving Columbus. Lastly, Ford comes from USC where he was the starter in 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Moving Around Some Key Pieces<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Heading into the opener against Ball State four of the five positions are pretty well set. Cox is your starter at left tackle. In the spring the staff moved\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jager-burton-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jager Burton<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0to center. The sophomore from Lexington played in all 13 games last season, mostly at left guard. He became the first UK player since\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Logan Stenberg<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0to earn freshmen All-SEC honors. However, he also spent emergency time at center. The staff was so impressed that he moved there in 2023. This allowed\u00a0<\/span>Eli Cox<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, who was the starting center last year, to go back to his normal guard position.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">With Cox taking over at tackle\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kenneth Horsey<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0moves back to his preferred position of left guard. The super senior spent most of 2022 at tackle, a spot he wasn\u2019t as familiar with, and had an up-and-down year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ford most likely starts the season at right tackle though last year&#8217;s starter\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jeremy-flax-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeremy Flax<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is also in the mix. Behind them, the Cats have several other options. One name to watch on the line freshman\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>Koby Keenum<\/strong>.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0The Alabama native is the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2022\/12\/21\/kentucky-signs-offensive-lineman-koby-keenum\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">highest-ranked offensive lineman in the 2023 class.<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0UK also has\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Grant Bingham, Paul Rodriguez<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, and\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Malachi Wood<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0are also competing for playing time.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/nikolas-hall-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nikolas Hall<\/a><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0son of former UK great <strong>Antonio Hall<\/strong>, will miss 2023 due to injury.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Now that we&#8217;ve finished up the offensive let&#8217;s flip to the defense as we continue our 2023 Kentucky Position Previews: Linemen.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">All-SEC Player<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">One of the biggest stories in 2022 was the development of tackle\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/deone-walker-1.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-03_cfb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Deone Walker<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. During his first season, the Detroit native had 40 tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble. He was named SEC\u2019s co-Defensive Lineman of the week for his performance against Louisville. In that contest, he made six tackles, had a half-sack, and forced a fumble. As a result of his strong play, Walker was also named a freshman All-American.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Heading into this season Walker is on the watch lists for both the Nagurski Award and the Outland Trophy. In fact, he&#8217;s been so dominant in camp that Stoops had to &#8220;take action&#8221; recently.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Expectations obviously sky-high for Kentucky Wildcats sophomore DT Deone Walker. Here\u2019s Mark Stoops\u2019 quip about \u201cthrowing him out of the scrimmage today\u201d so the offense had a better chance\u2026  <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BBN?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#BBN<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/vWPkRfsl6N\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/vWPkRfsl6N<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Jeff Drummond (@JDrumUK) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JDrumUK\/status\/1692971443494014981?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">August 19, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Taking A Big Step Forward<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A season ago\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/josaih-hayes-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Josaih Hayes<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0split time with\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=justin-rogers-4,justin-rogers-3&amp;search=Justin+Rogers&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-03_cfb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Justin Rogers<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0at the nose guard position. However, Rogers transferred to Auburn after the season. In 11 games Hayes recorded eight tackles and a pass deflection. His playing time went down considerably at the end of the year as\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jamarius-dinkins-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jamarius Dinkins<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0emerged as the backup nose guard. Dinkins made nine tackles and had a sack in nine games. Most notably he had a big game against\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2022\/11\/19\/georgia-gets-by-kentucky-16-6\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the national champion Georgia Bulldogs.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hayes made great strides in the spring and that&#8217;s continued into camp as has Dinkins, a three-star player from Ohio. For Kentucky\u2019s defense to be great they\u2019ll need more consistent play from both guys. As we continue with our 2023 Kentucky Position Previews: Linemen let\u2019s look at a transfer the staff has high hopes for.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Instant Impact Transfer<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As we\u2019ve talked about Kentucky really improved its roster through the transfer portal. One of the newcomers is on the defensive line.\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/keeshawn-silver-1.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-03_cfb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Keeshawn Silver<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, a 6-4,315 pounder from Rocky Mountain, North Carolina left\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Mack Brown\u2019s<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0program and headed to Lexington.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Coming out of high school Silver ranked as the 31st-best player in the nation. Here&#8217;s a fun fact Silver was ranked higher than\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2023\/08\/17\/2023-preseason-heisman-rankings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Heisman Trophy<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0contender\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/drake-maye-1.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-08-22_cfb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Drake Maye<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. However, he never found much playing time in Chapel Hill appearing in only four games in two years. He\u2019s pushing Dinkins and Hayes for playing time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The player likely backing up Walker is\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/octavious-oxendine-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Octavious Oxendine<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Playing in six games before a season-ending injury Oxendine recorded 15 tackles and two sacks in 2021. He dropped 30 pounds in the off-season in order to be quicker upfront. Unfortunately, it didn\u2019t quite work out the way he and defensive line coach\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Anwar Stewart<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0hoped. As a result, he bulked back up for 2023. Former Ohio State transfer\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Darrion Henry-Young<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0also provides depth.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Keeping The Status Quo<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The defensive end spot shouldn\u2019t see much change from 2022. Redshirt junior\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/trevonn-rybka-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Tre\u2019Vonn Rybka<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0appeared in 12 games last season making 19 tackles and a sack. He\u2019s backed up by redshirt sophomore\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/kahlil-saunders-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Khalil Saunders<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0who made 13 stops and had a half sack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">UK also has three freshmen on the defensive line whose time will come, just maybe not this year.\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Tavion Gadson, Kendrick Gilbert,\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Tommy Zeismer<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Final Thoughts<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Led by Walker the Kentucky defensive line could go eight or nine deep and has a chance to be one of the SEC\u2019s best in 2023. That&#8217;s a great problem to have for Stewart.
