Fleck<\/strong> addressed the media during Big Ten Media Days at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. He opened the session by expressing gratitude for the opportunity to lead Minnesota\u2019s flagship university and for support from athletic director <strong>Mark Coyle<\/strong> and interim president <strong>Jeff Ettinger.<\/strong> Fleck spoke about their on-field successes, academic growth, players, and team culture and addressed questions from the media.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Allegations of \u201cToxic Culture\u201d<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fleck addressed the recent report from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/frontofficesports.com\/former-gophers-players-staff-reveal-troubling-allegations-of-toxic-culture-under-p-j-fleck\/?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_campaign=article-sharing\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Front Office Sports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about allegations of a \u201ctoxic culture\u201d within the Gopher football program in the Q&amp;A session. He stated the claims are \u201cBaseless,\u201d and he has \u201cFull support from Coyle and university leadership.\u201d Fleck specifically addressed questions regarding a &#8220;Fleck Bank&#8221; and &#8220;Fleck Coins&#8221; allegedly used to violate team rules. He refuted these claims, explaining that the Fleck Bank was merely an analogy used to emphasize the importance of investing in the program.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>A Mix of Experienced and Inexperienced Players<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fleck discussed the mix of experienced and inexperienced players. He noted the challenge of replacing <strong>Tanner Morgan<\/strong>, <strong>Mohamed Ibrahim<\/strong>, Mariano Sori-Marin, and Jordan Howden. He spoke about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/chris-autman-bell-1.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-07-27_cfb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Autman-Bell<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/brevyn-spann-ford-1.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-07-27_cfb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brevyn Spann-Ford<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/tyler-nubin-1.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-07-27_cfb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyler Nubin<\/a>, who have a combined 18 years of Gopher football experience, contributing to the team&#8217;s depth and leadership. Spann-Ford was recently named to the <a href=\"https:\/\/bigten.org\/news\/2023\/7\/21\/big-ten-announces-football-preseason-honors.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Preseason All-Big Ten First Team<\/a>, and Autman-Bell and Nubin were named Preseason All-Big Ten Second Team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fleck said that Autman-Bell, who goes by the nickname CRAB, is getting close to 100 percent. He missed the final nine games of the 2022 season because of a torn anterior cruciate knee ligament.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Season Opener versus Nebraska<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2023\/06\/07\/how-nebraska-matches-up-with-minnesotas-defense\/\" target=\"_self\">season opener against Nebraska<\/a> in a Thursday night prime-time matchup presents a tough challenge for the Gophers. Fleck acknowledged his respect for Nebraska head coach <strong>Matt Rhule<\/strong> and said he\u2019s a phenomenal football coach with a phenomenal culture. Fleck looks forward to kicking off the season against Nebraska and anticipates an exciting environment at Huntington Bank Stadium.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Embracing the Schedule<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking ahead to the 2023 season, Fleck said the Gophers have the second-hardest schedule in the country behind Old Miss. He said that he presented the challenging schedule as an opportunity for the team, emphasizing the importance of composure, balance, confidence, and poise. He called the schedule the &#8220;second most opportunistic&#8221; in America, and the team has embraced this challenge with enthusiasm.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Protecting Rivalry Games<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fleck stated that keeping rivalry games in the Big Ten is important. The conference will be moving forward with a new format, that eliminates division play as USC and UCLA join next year. Fleck praised the Big Ten for preserving rivalries because of the role they play in the pageantry of college football. He said playing for Paul Bunyan&#8217;s Axe and Floyd of Rosedale is an incredibly important tradition for Gophers fans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Academic Growth<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fleck noted that academically, the Gophers have made significant strides. <\/span>In the program&#8217;s history, the Gophers have had 27 Academic All-Americans, with nine of them achieved during Fleck&#8217;s tenure. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He recognized the team\u2019s dedication to success on the field and academic success in the classroom.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-49200\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/07\/USATSI_19524520_168400536_lowres-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"P.J.
