For three decades the Kentucky and Florida football series wasn’t much of a rivalry. From 1987-2017 the Gators won 31 straight. However, since\u00a0Mark Stoops<\/a> took over the Cats have turned it into one. In recent history, the games have gone down to the wire with some occasional strange things happening. Saturday night in “The Swamp” was no different. After a shaky first half, they dominated the second as Kentucky beats Florida 26-16 as Stoops becomes the winningest coach in school history.<\/p>\n The first quarter was mostly controlled by the defenses. Between the two schools, there were six punts on the first seven possessions. A 39-yard field goal by Adam Mihalek<\/a> put the Gators up 3-0. Kentucky finally got on the board following a 55-yard touchdown pass from Will Levis<\/a> to Dane Key<\/a>. That’s the second score in as many weeks for the freshman.<\/p>\n Billy Napier’s<\/a>\u00a0club cut the lead to 1 on another Mihalek field goal. That’s when things took a turn for the worse for the Big Blue Nation. Levis was picked off by Gervon Dexter<\/a> Sr. Five plays later Trevor Etienne<\/a> took it 11 yards for the score. Anthony Richardson<\/a>‘s pass to Etienne put Florida up 14-7.<\/p>\n On their next possession, UK was forced to punt and it did not go well. An errant snap went all the way into the end zone forcing Colin Goodfellow<\/strong> to kick it out for safety.<\/p>\n Kentucky needed a momentum shift and they got it on an interception by Jordan Wright<\/a>. The senior linebacker, who wasn’t cleared to even play until late in the week, ran it back to the Florida six. Levis took it in for the score from one yard out. However, UK failed on the conversion and trailed 16-13 at the half.<\/p>\n Much like they did last week against Miami (Ohio) <\/a>the Cats dominated the second half. A 24 yard field goal by Matt Ruffolo<\/a> tied the game at 16. Then came the momentum shift Kentucky needed. On the next possession Keidron Smith<\/a> took a Richardson pass 65 yards for a “pick six” to give the Cats the lead.
