Dixon was one of the few Youngstown State players to hear from the NFL. <strong>\u00a0Patrick Minenok, Zaire Jones, <\/strong>and<strong> Christian Turner<\/strong> are still waiting for a call.<\/p>\n<h3>Career Before Youngstown State<\/h3>\n<p>In high school, Dixon played for Roxbury, finishing as Two-time Northwest Jersey Conference Player of The Year, two-time captain and a three-time winner of the George Bocchino Memorial Award. \u00a0In his senior season, the Gaels finished with an 8-2 ecord, losing to Wayne Hills in the North 1 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maxpreps.com\/nj\/succasunna\/roxbury-gaels\/football\/15-16\/schedule\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Group 4<\/a> State Qualifier. Dixon did not only play linebacker but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/highschoolsports\/article\/northwest-jersey-athletic-conference-football-player-of-the-year-and-other-postseason-honors-2015\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">quarterback <\/a>too.<\/p>\n<p>After graduation, Dixon&#8217;s next stop was Marist, a member of the Pioneer Football League. \u00a0He started all 11 games his sophomore and junior seasons. \u00a0A key highlight in those two seasons was leading the team in total tackles with 86 and returning an interception <a href=\"https:\/\/goredfoxes.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/grant-dixon\/9588\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">62-yards<\/a> for his first touchdown.<\/p>\n<h3>Dixon Transfers to Youngstown State<\/h3>\n<p>With his senior campaign on the line due to the pandemic hitting, Dixon, a graduate transfer, decided to put his name in the portal. \u00a0Former Penguins coaches <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vindy.com\/sports\/local-sports\/2021\/08\/one-last-chance\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Bryan Nardo<\/strong><\/a> and <strong>Joe Schaefer<\/strong> along with head coach <strong>Dough Phillips<\/strong> were in need of an experienced linebacker. \u00a0With the NCAA halting in-person recruiting trips, the coaches and Dixon talked through Zoom call.<\/p>\n<p>Last season, <a href=\"https:\/\/ysusports.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/grant-dixon\/5398\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dixon<\/a> finished with two interceptions and 55 total tackles. \u00a0He did this all while not playing at 100 percent. \u00a0One of the interceptions he had against Indiana State was with the cast on. \u00a0The season before, he was named All-Missouri Valley selection, the first penguin linebacker since <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businessjournaldaily.com\/ysu-footballs-dixon-named-first-team-all-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Terry<\/a><\/strong> in 2007. \u00a0With all the success he had and with graduation, Dixon decided to declare for the NFL Draft.<\/p>\n<h3>Former YSU Linebacker Grant Dixon invited to Colts mini camp<\/h3>\n<p>In YSU&#8217;s pro day, Dixon finished with a <a href=\"https:\/\/draftscout.com\/dsprofile.php?PlayerId=1018634&amp;DraftYear=2022\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vertical jump<\/a> of 37, broad jump of 10&#8217;05&#8221; and 21 reps on a 225 bench press. With Olgetree taken in the sixth round, Dixon waited for his chance, but his phone never rang on draft day. \u00a0However, Dixon has a shot to compete on an NFL roster now in a big way. \u00a0He and Ogletree with reunite as teammates for the Indianapolis Colts, pending a rookie tryout for the linebacker.
