He’s also the 14th-ranked offensive tackle and a composite 4-star. Chan never really appeared to consider many other destinations; he made no official visits beyond a June 25th trip to South Bend. Chan was relatively silent during the coaching changes in South Bend. He voiced his support for the hiring of Marcus Freeman but little else. On December 9th, Chan tweeted a picture of him, offensive coordinator Tommy Rees and assistant offensive line coach Trevor Mendelson. The tweet’s caption finished with the statement, “I’m 100% locked in”, seemingly affirming his commitment.

At 6’6 300, Ty Chan is listed as a tackle but could move to guard as well. He has good mobility that plays well in both pass protection and run blocking. The Irish are tackle-heavy in this draft and may look to move Chan inside to guard. This likely entails adding on some more pounds to a somewhat leaner frame. But the versatility will be a nice addition to the Irish line. Current freshmen Blake Fisher and Joe Alt look to be long-term starters at tackle. Fellow 2022 recruit Aamil Wagner also figures to be more of a tackle prospect. The depth is more questionable at guard, and Chan could slide into the rotation pretty quickly if he adjusts. Given the need to add to his frame and transition to a new position, he’s unlikely to start year 1. However, Chan projects as a 2 or 3-year impact starter for the Irish.

A long-time Notre Dame commit, Ty Chan made things official by signing early with the Fighting Irish.
