{"id":40794,"date":"2021-11-08T08:00:09","date_gmt":"2021-11-08T13:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/?p=40794"},"modified":"2021-12-13T19:07:11","modified_gmt":"2021-12-14T00:07:11","slug":"penguins-fall-to-the-fighting-hawks-late","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2021\/11\/08\/penguins-fall-to-the-fighting-hawks-late\/","title":{"rendered":"Penguins Fall To The Fighting Hawks Late"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With last week&#8217;s disappointing <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2021\/11\/02\/penguins-fall-to-jackrabbits\/\" target=\"_self\">loss to South Dakota State<\/a>, the Penguins looked to bounce back in a big way against the three and five North Dakota Fighting Hawks, the first meeting between the two teams since 1962, the third meeting all time.\u00a0 It didn&#8217;t end well for YSU as the Penguins fall to the Fighting Hawks 24-21.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news for this game was that quarterback <\/span><b>Demeatric Crenshaw<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was ready to go after he sat out last week due to a lower body injury.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First Quarter\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youngstown State got the ball rolling on its first possession from play when Crenshaw found <\/span><b>Samuel St. Surin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a 10-yard pickup.\u00a0 One play later and it was <\/span><b>Jaleel McLauglin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> putting it in for a five-yard touchdown making it a 7-0 game.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Dakota got a scare on its first drive when <strong>Otis Weah<\/strong> nearly lost the football thanks to a strip by <\/span><b>Grant Dixon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who was still wearing his cast.\u00a0 But the Fighting Hawks retained possession.\u00a0 That led to a <\/span><b>Tommy Schus<\/b><b>t<\/b><b>er<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> nine-yard touchdown pass to <\/span><b>Bo Belquist<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tying the game at seven.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YSU scored once more before the end of the quarter when <\/span><b>Christian Turner <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">broke free for a 20-yard run and then a one-yard touchdown the next possession making it a 14 to 7 game at the end of the quarter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second Quarter\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both teams were playing a defensive matchup in the second quarter.\u00a0 Some highlights were with the Fighting Hawks driving and looking to score, Schusters pass was then picked off by <\/span><b>Jordan White<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the Penguins own 34.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Fighting Hawks and the Penguins traded punts right after from <\/span><b>Cade Peterson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Paddy Lynch <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but what was near disastrous was when <\/span><b>Nick DeSalvo <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the next punting possession muffed the punt which was recovered by North Dakota\u2019s <\/span><b>Jacob Odom<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 The Fighting Hawks also missed a kick from <\/span><b>Brady Stevens<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the half, it was a big time defensive matchup. Both teams needed to gain some momentum and head into the right direction for the final two weeks.\u00a0 It was still 14 to 7 Youngstown State.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3rd Quarter\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schuster and the Fighting Hawks were nearly stopped on their first possession but a couple penalties, one being a hold from <\/span><b>Zaire Jones<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gave UND new life.\u00a0 Schuster found a hole open and gained 14-yards but was then only held to a Stevens 48-yard field goal making it 14-10 Penguins going into the fourth quarter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YSU this season has had trouble in the second half but now with time on their side, this was the opportunity for them to close it out.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4th Quarter\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fourth quarter opened with YSU making a huge fourth and one stop by <\/span><b>Jelani Stafford<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Once that happened, the Penguins went 10 plays and capped it off with a Crenshaw one yard touchdown run and it looked like all was sealed for the Penguins.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The defense played a big impact and was dominant and the offense had looked a lot better than what fans have seen the last couple of weeks.\u00a0 All looked to have been according to plan.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, something changed as North Dakota suddenly went down the field not pressured and Schuster went to <\/span><b>Garrett Maag<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a 16-yard strike in the endzone.\u00a0 The two point conversion was no good but now it was a four point 21 to 16 ballgame.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This time YSU had to control the ball and the clock but that backfired as Crenshaw was sacked in the backfield by <\/span><b>Jaxson Turner<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and McLaughlin was stopped by <\/span><b>Jordan Canady<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Quentin Seguin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Fighting Hawks got the ball and didn\u2019t look back. Welsh, in just two plays, broke free for a 43-yard touchdown and with the two point conversion it was now a three point 24 to 21 game with everyone wondering what had just happened.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One Last Drive\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crenshaw and the Penguins had one last drive to make something happen, but after driving down the field a bit, he was sacked by <\/span><b>Devon Krzanowski<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Ben McNaboe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making the final 24-21 with the Penguins now falling three straight with just two games to go in their 10 game schedule.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youngstown Stats\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Demeatric Crenshaw: 13-17 for 75 yards, 0 touchdowns and one interception.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jaleel McLaughlin: 18 carries for 122 yards and a touchdown.\u00a0 Seven receptions for 39 yards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christian Turner: three receptions for 17 yards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samuel St. Surin: one reception for 10 yards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Dakota Stats<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tommy Schuster: 23 of 35 for 191 yards two touchdowns and one interception.\u00a0 Five carries for 22 yards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Otis Weah: 14 carries for 90 yards and a touchdown.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bo Belquist: nine receptions for 52 yards and one touchdown.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Garrett Maag: three receptions for 28 yards and one touchdown.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up Next:\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youngstown State (2-6, 1-5 in MVFC) will host the number one team in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, North Dakota State Bison (8-1, 5-1 in MVFC).\u00a0 North Dakota State currently sits at #2 in the country.
