{"id":40560,"date":"2021-11-02T08:00:03","date_gmt":"2021-11-02T12:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/?p=40560"},"modified":"2021-11-01T23:29:40","modified_gmt":"2021-11-02T03:29:40","slug":"penguins-fall-to-jackrabbits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2021\/11\/02\/penguins-fall-to-jackrabbits\/","title":{"rendered":"Penguins Fall To JackRabbits."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the Penguins coming off of a disappointing 28-17 loss last Saturday to<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2021\/10\/24\/penguins-fall-to-sycamores-28-17\/\" target=\"_self\"> Indiana State<\/a> and the injury to <\/span><b>Demeatric Crenshaw<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it was time to regroup for South Dakota State with experienced quarterback Joe Craycraft.\u00a0 In order to make it to the FCS playoffs, this was the first step, afterwards it was winning out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last time these teams met was during the spring season where the Jackrabbits made a go-ahead field goal with the final score 19-17. This time, South Dakota State ran away with the game, beating YSU 47-16.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1st Quarter\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Dakota State got off to a early start against the Penguins defense as now starting quarterback <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/f\/2\/qdfv6lw6difmm1\/YSU_SDSU_Stats.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Chris Oladokun<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found his tight end <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/f\/2\/qdfv6lw6difmm1\/YSU_SDSU_Stats.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Zach Heins<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wide open, 25-yards out to go\u00a0 up 7 to 0 early on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After forcing a <\/span><b>Paddy Lynch<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> punt, the Jackrabbits went down the field again. They needed only nine plays as running back <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/f\/2\/qdfv6lw6difmm1\/YSU_SDSU_Stats.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Pierre Strong Jr <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">went five yards making it 14 to 0.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last points were late in the first by YSU after two big runs by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/f\/2\/qdfv6lw6difmm1\/YSU_SDSU_Stats.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jaleel McLaughlin<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/f\/2\/qdfv6lw6difmm1\/YSU_SDSU_Stats.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Andrew Olgetree<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 The drive did stall after a Craycraft incompletion and had to settle for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/f\/2\/qdfv6lw6difmm1\/YSU_SDSU_Stats.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Colten McFadden<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> field goal making it 14-3 at the end of one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2nd Quarter\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only points that were scored in the second quarter were on a field goal by South Dakota State kicker <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/f\/2\/qdfv6lw6difmm1\/YSU_SDSU_Stats.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Cole Frahm<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from 52-yards out making it 17-3.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some other noticeable outlooks in this quarter was the Penguins defense stepping up with an interception by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/f\/2\/qdfv6lw6difmm1\/YSU_SDSU_Stats.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Quincy Lenton<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a fumble recovery by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/f\/2\/qdfv6lw6difmm1\/YSU_SDSU_Stats.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jordan White<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YSU made progress on defense, but there was still a half to go as they looked to get the offensive part rolling.\u00a0 So far the Penguins have not been efficient when it has come in the second half, but that could all change here.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3rd Quarter\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Things started to go downhill by the start of the third for both sides of the ball for YSU. \u00a0Two plays in and Craycraft&#8217;s pass was picked off by <strong>Malik Lofton<\/strong>, his second of the season.\u00a0 Next was a 35-yard touchdown run by Strong making it 24-3.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After that the whole third quarter were the Jackrabbits hopping in the endzone for another touchdown and pressuring Craycraft.\u00a0 South Dakota State&#8217;s final touchdown in the quarter came when backup QB <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/f\/2\/qdfv6lw6difmm1\/YSU_SDSU_Stats.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Rudy Voss<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> came in for a wildcat play for a touchdown.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This quarter also saw another injury in a scary moment as Craycraft left the game with an injury and third string now backup <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/f\/2\/qdfv6lw6difmm1\/YSU_SDSU_Stats.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Mitch Davidson<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the former quarterback for the Salem Quakers came into the lineup.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two plays for Davidson, and he would find <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/f\/2\/qdfv6lw6difmm1\/YSU_SDSU_Stats.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Bryce Oliver<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the end of the third making it 31 to nine however after a blocked kick which went all the way for two points making it 33 to nine after three.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4th Quarter\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fourth quarter was mostly a kill the clock quarter for the JackRabbits while putting the second string in.\u00a0 Their first touchdown of the quarter was Oladokun\u2019s one-yard run and their last being a touchdown run by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/f\/2\/qdfv6lw6difmm1\/YSU_SDSU_Stats.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Amar Johnson<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youngstown State got a score early in the fourth with Davidson getting his second career touchdown once again to Oliver, but it was not enough as the Jackrabbits pulled away from the start to finish with a 47-16 victory.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YSU Stats\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joe Craycraft: four of ten, 36 yards one interception (left game late).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mitch Davidson: six of seven, 111 yards and two touchdowns.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jaleel McLaughlin: eight carries for 54 yards\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bryce Oliver: three receptions for 78 yards and two touchdowns.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Dakota State Stats:\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chris Oldaokun: 16-22 for 260 yards, one touchdown and one interception.\u00a0 One rushing touchdown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pierre Strong: 19 carries for 163 yards and two touchdowns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amar Johnson: 18 Carrie\u2019s for 87 yards and a touchdown.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rudy Voss: three carries for 42 yards and one touchdown.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zach Heins: two catches for 38 yards and a touchdown.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up Next:\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youngstown State (2-5, 1-4 in MVFC) will head to North Dakota to take on the Fighting Hawks (3-5, 1-4 in the MVFC).\u00a0 The first meeting between these two since September 1962.\u00a0 These two teams were originally supposed to play each other in the Spring season, but was cancelled due to COVID.
