{"id":40306,"date":"2021-10-24T16:00:25","date_gmt":"2021-10-24T20:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/?p=40306"},"modified":"2021-10-24T14:54:54","modified_gmt":"2021-10-24T18:54:54","slug":"penguins-fall-to-sycamores-28-17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2021\/10\/24\/penguins-fall-to-sycamores-28-17\/","title":{"rendered":"Penguins Fall to Sycamores 28-17."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a big upset two weeks ago and keeping their playoff hopes alive,\u00a0 it was time for the Penguins and coach <strong>Doug Phillips<\/strong> to rest up during their bye week and prepare for another big time road matchup.\u00a0 This time, against Indiana State at Memorial Stadium, a team they lost to at the same place just two seasons ago 24-17. It did not go the way YSU hope as the Penguins fall to the Sycamores 28-17.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sycamores were one of the few teams that opted out during the Spring season.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indiana State was coming off of a tough loss to the Missouri State Bears last Saturday 37-7 and were in need of a turn around to head back to a .500 record with coach <strong>Curt Mallory<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1st Quarter\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a few pass completions by ISU quarterback <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/h\/4\/vg59idymhpkpuu\/YSU-ISU_Stats.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Anthony Thompson<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he decided to use his feet next, taking it in from six-yards out making it an early 7 to 0 lead in the first quarter.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With it still being early, Youngstown State had a runner of its own making an impact.\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/h\/4\/vg59idymhpkpuu\/YSU-ISU_Stats.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jaleel McLaughlin<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 rushed for a 31-yard pickup, and then a few plays later, broke free again from 21-yards out.\u00a0 The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/h\/4\/vg59idymhpkpuu\/YSU-ISU_Stats.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Colten McFadden<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> PAT tied it at seven.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, that\u2019s when the ground momentum from McLaughlin and his quarterback <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/h\/4\/vg59idymhpkpuu\/YSU-ISU_Stats.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Demeatric Crenshaw<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> came to an abrupt end. Crenshaw was taken to the medical tent and the locker room after suffering a lower body injury and was unable to return. It was time for fifth year senior <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/h\/4\/vg59idymhpkpuu\/YSU-ISU_Stats.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Joe Craycraft<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to step up back at Memorial Stadium.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last play of the first quarter was Thompson finding tight end <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/h\/4\/vg59idymhpkpuu\/YSU-ISU_Stats.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Zach Larkin<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a 33-yard pickup, but the quarter ended with the two teams still tied at seven.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2nd Quarter<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indiana State opened the second quarter with a three play drive resulting in running back <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/h\/4\/vg59idymhpkpuu\/YSU-ISU_Stats.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Peterson Kerlegrand<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> taking it in two-yards out making it 14 to 7.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Penguins made a big play on defense however when Indiana State was driving again.\u00a0 Thompson\u2019s pass was picked off by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/h\/4\/vg59idymhpkpuu\/YSU-ISU_Stats.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Grant Dixon<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who was playing with one healthy hand, wearing a club-like cast on the other.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The offense stalled for a few possessions with Youngstown State scoring before the end of the half when Craycraft found Kentucky transfer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/h\/4\/vg59idymhpkpuu\/YSU-ISU_Stats.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Bryce Oliver<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the back of the endzone 14-yards out for the touchdown, tying it all at 14 going into the half.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3rd Quarter<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youngstown State took six minutes off the clock in the start of the third quarter as they started to drive down the field led by Craycraft and McLaughlin.\u00a0 However, they would have to settle for three after a dropped pass in the end zone by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/h\/4\/vg59idymhpkpuu\/YSU-ISU_Stats.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Andrew Olgatree<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The score was now 17-14 but the momentum soon changed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indiana State&#8217;s last play in the third would be a one yard run, but now they were driving at the Penguins 12-yard line. \u00a0With the third coming to an end, both teams were in the huddle on how to stop the others grind.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4th Quarter<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That set up for a Thompson quarterback rushing touchdown from 12-yards out making it 21-17.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On YSUs next possession it got worse as Craycraft threw an interception right to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/h\/4\/vg59idymhpkpuu\/YSU-ISU_Stats.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Ethan Hoover<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 After that, it was the nail in the coffin as Thompson gave the ball to Kerlegrad who took it 53-yards to the end zone making the score now 28-17.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Penguins did have two more chances, but on both possessions, Craycraft threw two costly interceptions ending the game with the final score of 28-17 and there\u2019s going to be talk for next week if Crenshaw will be able to play because of the injury he sustained early on.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With this loss, Youngstown State is still winless on the road with their last road win being in 2017.\u00a0 (Not counting the Guardian FCS Kickoff in 2019 since that was a touchdown.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grant Dixon: interception<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthony Thompson: 13-21 for 156 yards, one interception, no touchdowns.\u00a0 Rushed for 63 yards on 12 carries and two touchdowns.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preston Kerlegrand: 25 carries for 151 yards and two touchdowns.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zach Larkin: five receptions for 65 yards\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dante Hendrix: three
