At 4-3 overall, LSU has a big cloud overlooking the program. The recent news of Ed Orgeron’s departure at the end of this season will almost certainly be on the player’s minds. This match-up is one that LSU needs to win to get one game closer to bowl eligibility. After a 49-42 win over Florida last weekend, the Tigers are looking to upset another top 25 opponent.

LSU-Ole Miss 2021 Preview

Ole Miss could be without quarterback Matt Corral for Saturday’s game in Oxford. That could spell trouble for a team that nearly lost to Tennessee last week. The Tigers are hungry for yet another win over a quality SEC opponent. In 2020, LSU defeated Ole Miss 53-48 to finish 5-5 in a shortened season. But this year is different. The Tigers are still struggling and the news of the team’s head coach only makes things worse. However, LSU can draw up the perfect game plan to take down the Rebels this week.

Running Game is Key

The Tigers ran the ball very effectively last week, as Sophomore tailback Tyrion Davis-Price had a career day. He carried the ball 36 times for a school single-game record 287 yards and three touchdowns. On the season, Ole Miss is allowing 196 rushing yards per game. LSU ran the counter run and halfback draw perfectly last week. That scheme could work to exploit the Rebels’ run defense. If LSU is going to have success on offense, the running game is crucial. Not only does Davis-Price need to be effective, but Corey Kiner and Armoni Goodwin need to see the field as well.

Passing Attack Must Be Efficient

LSU is without star-wideout Kayshon Boutte for the remainder of the season due to injury. Max Johnson passed for 133 yards and three touchdowns against Florida. Facing Ole Miss, Johnson is going to be pressured into throwing the ball into coverage. Malik Nabers and Deion Smith will have to step up and gain first down receptions for the passing game to be successful. The Rebels are giving up 239 passing yards per game in 2021. That is good news for Johnson if he can manage to get the ball to open receivers for significant yardage.

LSU Defense Needs Another Big Game

The Tigers’ defense showed up to play against Florida and recorded four interceptions. After a season and a half of being mediocre, the unit stepped up in a big way. Going into this game, the unit needs that same type of performance. With Corral potentially out, LSU could take advantage of an inexperienced starter under center early and often. However, if Lane Kiffin gives former quarterback John Rhys Plumlee the start, the Tigers will have a tough challenge. Two seasons ago, Plumlee torched LSU’s defense on the ground with his rushing ability.

LSU-Ole Miss 2021 Prediction

The LSU-Ole Miss 2021 installment of the rivalry is a meaningful game for both teams. LSU needs a win and the Rebels must win to keep their great season going. Following last week’s upset, the Bayou Bengals will be lurking for another victory. Plus, the Rebels could be down their best player. If that is the scenario, LSU will take down the Rebels inside Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

Embed from Getty Images

The LSU-Ole Miss 2021 edition of the rivalry is a key game for the Tigers.
